Raleigh Post 1 Defeats Cary Post 67

    June 25, 2009 - Enloe High School

    Raleigh Post 1 ..... 9
    Cary Post 67 .......7

    WP - Nate Smith
HR: Post 1 - Cameron Richards 2; Khalil Robinson; Post 67 - Eric Brady, Rhino

Trailing 6 to 5 in the bottom of the 8th inning, Post 1's Khalil Robinson hit a grand slam. Nate Smith, Post 1's third pitcher of the game, picked up the win after pitching a scoreless 7th and 8th inning. Smith's lone blemish was a 9th inning 2-out solo homerun surrendered to Rhino.

Cameron Richards had a career day with 2 solo homeruns and a double off the top of the fence. Post 1 now moves to 9 - 7 Conference; 10 - 7 Overall.

    UPCOMING GAME

Raleigh Post 1 over Cary Post 67

Just an update from the Cary side - Cary was up 6-1 after 6 innings. Cary's starter Chris Perry pitching those innings. But Cary's pitching went south after that, several walks, and even worse was several errors to help Post 1 score those 8 runs in the 7th and 8th innings. Also Rhino homered earlier in the game, Perry hit the home run with 2 outs in the 9th.

Cary should really be kicking themselves, because with only 2 losses, they were in 1st place in the conference. With the loss, Cary goes to 12-4, 9-3 conference, and gives Durham (also with 3 losses, but 2 wins over Cary) the clear inside track to finishing 1st. Cary must now hope to keep 2nd from Clayton, who they play twice this weekend, Clayton has 4 conference losses. Cary was missing 2 starters, but that didn't play into the blowing of the 6-1 lead.

We split the double header vs Post 1 and need to wait on Cary to see what we need to do Sunday vs. Apex.

Durham is 15-5, and 12-3 in conference. Found out today that 1st place is a bye in the 1st round of the playoffs.

    Edited to say:

All we need to do is beat Apex and we have a 1st round bye.

    Wilson 7, Edenton 0

Bentley Massey pitched a 3-hit shutout in the road win, and Post 13 solidified its hold on 2nd place in Area I East North. Wilson improved to 4-2 in the league with only a Friday doubleheader at Tarboro/Edgecombe County remaining in conference play. With a win in either game, Post 13 assures itself of homefield advantage in the first round Tuesday vs. #3 from the South Conference.

Wilson (6-8 overall) was scheduled to close the regular season Sunday vs. Apex at Barton College, but I see Durham is playing them in a conference game. Edenton slipped to 3-4 and is likely #3 from the North. Rocky Mount is first (7-1, 8-2), and Ahoskie is currently fourth (2-6, 4-15).

Does anyone have the playoff brackets by seeding? I realize that the teams have not yet been fully slotted but I am trying to get an idea of how the playoffs work.

    Thanks!

    Clayton 14 Cary 1

For the second straight game, Cary imploded. This game was 2-1 after 7 innings, which was very indicative of the play up that point, Clayton slightly outplaying Cary. It was a well played game, although Cary did give Clayton a run via an error.

But Cary just stunk it up in the 8th, committing about 5 errors as Clayton scored 8 runs. Cary didn't hit all night, Cary didn't field at the end of the game, the only bright spot was Cary's starter Kyle Hathcock who pitched well for 6 innings.

Cary is undermanned, missing 3 starters tonight, and it may not be much better tomorrow as they play at Kerr Lake, and home against Apex, then Sunday at Clayton. After tonight, 2nd place is really in jeopardy. Cary goes to 12-5, 9-4 conference, and fading very quickly.

Why is Cary missing so many starters at this crucial point in the season?

I know I am fairly "new" to this message board, but I have always thought that Cary fades away as the summer progresses. Cary always has a good team, but yet they are nowhere to be found when it matters. Is that the same story this year?

Cary is a prime reason why we see the same teams advance year-in year-out. Some teams give up and quit while others (like Wayne Co., C-Ville, Rowan, etc.) expect to be playing.

    Wilson 11-14, Edgecombe Co. 3-0

Wilson got route-going performances from Kyle Shields (1-1) and Justin Nygard (4-2) in a season-ending doubleheader sweep in Tarboro, 11-3 and 14-0. David Gibbons finished .500 for the season and cranked his 2nd HR in the first game and went 3-for-3 in the nightcap. Mitchell Wheeler also had his 2nd HR in the second game.

Post 13 (8-8, 6-2 Area I East North Conference) hosts a first-round playoff game Tuesday. Edgecombe County finishes 1-8, 1-7. Final conference standings are 1. Rocky Mount (7-1), 2. Wilson (6-2), 3. Edenton (4-4), 4. Ahoskie (2-6), 5. Edgecombe Co. (1-7), with the top four going to the playoffs.
