Queen City Mustangs 6...Lincoln County 4

    Lincoln.. 201 010...4...10...0
    Q. City.. 100 104...6...11...0

There have probably been crazier days in baseball around here, but not by much. With Queen City leading the series 2-0 and two rainouts already in the books and the Sunday deadline for the next series to start, the agreed upon start time for today's game was 4:30 (attempt to beat the evening rains, I guess). Well, the rains came early today and the Myers Park field in Charlotte was rendered unplayable. The decision was made for everyone to trek up to No. Lincoln HS (35 miles) and try to get the game in there. At this point, I believe if there was another rainout, then the series would be reduced by rule to a best-of-three series and since QC already had two wins it would be over (maybe, I don't know for sure). At any rate, the drive up to No. Lincoln proved to be fruitless as a huge downpour had just visited them and their field was a total mess. Credit must be given to the Lincoln players and coaches who were trying their hardest to make it playable, but to no avail. The Lincoln players were down to their practice shorts and barefoot in the mud trying to make something out of a quagmire. Most thought that was the end of it for today, but then the Lincoln coach makes a call to Cherryville and gets the green light to go over there, so everyone packs it up and heads for Cherryville (23 miles).

Upon arrival, things looked good, but soon the rains come and the start of the game is delayed. Once we get underway, Jacob Hoover of Lincoln drives one out of the park with a runner on and Lincoln is spotted to a 2-0 lead. David Daniels gets one back in the bottom of the 1st inning from the leadoff spot with a drive over the LF fence. Lincoln adds another run on an RBI double by Hoover and the Mustangs bounce back with a run on Lee Harrison's triple and an RBI single by Patrick Langdon. Both teams have very talented center-fielders and James Snover made a truly spectacular play in center for QC on a drive to the deepest part of the ballpark. While running full tilt with his back to home plate he snared a long drive with a leap just as it cleared his shoulder...very much an ESPN Top Ten type of play. Things stayed close and going into the bottom of the 6th, things were looking troublesome for QC, trailing 4-2 as another round of showers was fast approaching. Eddie Hull led off with a single and after a hit batsmen put a second runner on, the rain started coming on fairly heavy. The Lincoln coach did the super slow walk to the mound as if he were looking for a weather stoppage while his team was still ahead with QC threatening. His retreat was just as slow after the umpire broke up the conference and the QC fans were getting on the coach pretty good for the gamesmanship. When the action resumed, William Frazier stepped into the box with a steady rain coming down and drove the first pitch out of the ballpark to right center for a 3-run HR to put QC up for the first time 5-4. QC added an insurance run later in the inning on an RBI single by Taylor Rowe. After the Mustangs took the field for the 7th inning, the game was halted after two pitches due to a very heavy rain that lasted for about 10 minutes. The field was totally unplayable at this point, but it wasn't until a strong thunderstorm with lightning and high winds arrived about 15 minutes later that the game was finally called and Queen City emerged victorious, sweeping the series 3-0. The third round of the playoffs begin on Sunday as Cherryville hosts Queen City at 7:00 pm. Queen City is 21-5 and has won 13 straight games.

Left home at 3:30 and returned home at 11:00 and saw 6 innings of baseball and the better part of three counties (Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Gaston)...

    Cherryville 8....Queen City Mustangs 5

    Queen City...010 000 202...5..11..2
    Cherryville....002 020 04x...8..14..2

Cherryville hosted the opening game of one Area IV semifinal and it was a well-played and close game until the bottom of the 8th inning when Cherryville broke it open. Earlier, Tyler Powell got the Mustangs on the board with a towering HR to straightaway CF and the lead flipped to Cherryville in the next frame when they plated two runs on an RBI groundout and an RBI single by Trey Drury. Drury hit a bomb in the 5th inning with one aboard to make it 4-1 and the Mustangs were frustrated by back-to-back innings leaving the bases loaded. Bryce Bradley and James Snover had RBI hits for the Mustangs in the 7th inning to make the score 4-3. The crowd of over 350 folks was looking for a close finish, but that was not to happen as Cherryville erupted for four runs in the bottom of the 8th inning by bunching two errors, two singles, two intentional walks, a double, and a sac fly to extend their lead to 8-3. Queen City battled back in th 9th and scored two runs, but fell short with the rally and the game ended 8-5 in favor of Cherryville. Lou Trosch was the tough-luck losing pitcher as he suffered some unearned runs. Trey Drury picked up the win in relief.

Cherryville leads the series 1-0. Game two is Monday night at Jack Sink Field on the campus of Myers Park HS in Charlotte.

    Hickory @ Caldwell

Hickory Post 48 won game 1 @ Caldwell. Final score was 9-7. Hickory jumped out in the first with a 3-0 lead, but the game was very tight and went back and forth until it looked like Caldwell took the lead at 7-6 for good in the bottom of the 8th. Hickory countered with 3 runs in the top of the 9th and held CC in the bottom half. Great game. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Cherryville 8...Queen City Mustangs 0

    Cherryville....300 200 201...8..10..1
    Queen City...000 000 000...0...6..4

It was all Cherryville tonight as Post 100 took advantage of their opportunities and rode the arm of Drew Reynolds to a convincing 8-0 win
at Jack Sink Field in Charlotte. Reynolds scattered six hits and struck out 13 while only walking one batter. Trey Drewery continued his explosive hitting and has been a one man wrecking crew, going 3-3 with a triple and 2 doubles and 5RBIs....after two games, Drewery is 6-7 with a HR, triple and 3 doubles. Queen City has been suffering from the lethal combination of allowing unearned runs (4 tonight) and leaving large numbers of baserunners stranded, but you have to give the opponent credit for getting out of jams and for forcing the action at the plate.

Cherryville leads the series 2-0. Game two is Tuesday night at Fraley Stadium in Cherryville at 7:00.

    Winning Pitcher: Drew Reynolds
    Losing Pitcher: Olen Little

    Leading Hitters:

    QC: Bryce Bradley 2-4,
    QC: William Frazier 1-3, double
    QC: Lee Harrison 1-4, double
CV: Trey Drury 3-3, triple (2) doubles, 5RBI
CV: Thomas Bess 1-5 triple, 2RBI

    Queen City Mustangs 11...Cherryville 9

    Queen City...050 001 023...11...8...2
    Cherryville....000 021 006....9..12...3

Queen City bounced back in a win or go home game and prevailed 11-9 in what proved to be an exciting game to the very last out. Lee Harrison was the story early as he only allowed one hit through the first 4 innings for Queen City. The Mustangs put a 5-spot on the board in the second inning while recording only two hits in the frame, benefiting from three free passes and two errant throws to first base. The lead held and when Colin Manning blasted a 2-run HR into the net in LF in the 8th inning it felt like enough to make it to the finish line with a 8-3 lead. In the top of the 9th, William Frazier struck out with two outs but the catcher couldn't handle the pitch and Frazier barely beat the throw down to first base to extend the inning. That gave Eddie Hull another at bat and he responded with a 3-run HR to LF that provided a huge 11-3 cushion...or so it seemed.

In the bottom of the 9th, Cherryville got 6 straight hits with a HBP thrown in there to chase Harrison and they greeted reliever Lou Trosch with another RBI single and now things were really tight. The winning run was in the box for three straight batters, but Trosch was very cool under pressure and retired all three batters on a sac fly and two strikeouts looking to end the game.

Cherryville leads the series 2-1. Game four is Wednesday night at Jack Sink Field on the campus of Myers Park HS in Charlotte.

    Cherryville 15...Queen City Mustangs 6

    Cherryville....004 007 013...15..17..0
    Queen City...102 003 000....6...11..3

Cherryville wins the series and advances to the Section IV finals. Queen City starting pitcher William Frazier was relieved after 4 2/3, trailing 4-3. Dylan Hastings of Cherryville was also relieved after 4 2/3 innings with the same score. Trey Drewery continued his hot hitting, doubling with two out in the first inning. That was the only extra base hit Frazier had given up in 27 innings this season. Drewery went on to record two more hits and a couple of RBIs, capping a very productive series at the plate. Cherryville broke the game open in the 6th inning, scoring 7 runs and coasted from there. Blake Mostetler had a huge game, going 4-6 with a home run.

Queen City ends a very successful season with a record of 22-8, including a late season 13-game winning streak. Notable was the team unity and friendships that quickly formed with this team under the leadership of Head Coach Greg Clewis. The parents would like to thank Gerald Young, Athletic Director, for his commitment to the team and for providing this opportunity for these players to have a great summer together playing baseball for the Mustangs.

    Leading Hitters:

    CV: Dustin Wilson 2-3, RBI
