    Western Update

    Area IV Western Standings:

    1. Caldwell County.........13-1
    2. Shelby.....................12-4
    3. Lake Norman.............11-7
Rutherford County.... 9-6 (at Sh, at CC, CC)
    Taylorsville.............. 9-7 (at CC, Sh)
Henderson County.... 8-8 (at Hick, Ash)
Asheville................. 5-10 (At McD, McD, Hend)
    Hickory...................5-12 (Hend)
    Burke County...........5-12 (CC)
    McDowell County......3-13 (Ash, at Ash)

Several games missing in these standings, but 1-3 have been decided. Given the remaining schedules (and the missing scores), Henderson County appears to have a real shot at crawling up to fourth, and Rutherford County and Taylorsville could fall into a tie for fifth. Asheville appears to be destined for seventh, but they could conceivably catch Henderson County. Eighth is still up in the air.

If the standings stay the same:

sounds like the first round area IV matchups would now be:

    W2 Shelby vs E7 Huntersville
E3 Gaston Co. vs W6 Henderson Co.

W3 Lake Norman vs E6 Gastonia
    E2 Cherryville vs W7 Asheville

    E4 Charlotte vs W5 Taylorsville
W1 Caldwell Co. vs E8 Steele Creek

I guess there could stilll be a three-way tie for fourth in the west. Any idea on the tie-breaker SwampFox?

As far as I can tell ...

Rutherford swept Henderson, but split with Taylorsville.
    Taylorsville split with both.

    If the tiebreaker procedure is:
    1. head-to-head
    2. record vs. higher seed...

    So...
If Rutherford and Henderson tie, it's Rutherford.
If all three tie, it's Henderson.

Of course, if Rutherford wins one against Caldwell tonight, they will be fourth. If they win both, then they should be third over Lake Norman based on the the two wins they'd have over Caldwell.

    See, clear as mud.

 So are you saying that if it is a three-way tie, head to head doesn't matter? That means there are three possible outcomes with the same set of facts. If Caldwell and Shelby win the games tonight and thereby create a three-way tie at 9-9, either:

    (1) 4)R, 5)T, 6)H. (that makes the most sense to me, since head-to-head they were R:3-1; T:2-2 and H:1-3); or

    (2) 4) R, 5) H, 6) T. (this is the application of the Area III logic (or illogic) --R gets fourth because it is best head-to-head, but then you look at H and T head-to-head to see who is fifth. And that would be H based on its win over Caldwell); or

    (3) 4)H, 5)T, 6)R (because it is a three-way tie, head-to-head doesn't matter and you go to results vs. higher seeds -- H beat Caldwell once, neither of the others did. T beat Shelby once, R will have been swept by doth Caldwell and Shelby)

You know, somebody really ought to write down how this is supposed to be done! :banginghe :lalala: :thud:

Maybe Rutherford or Taylorsville will win on the field tonight and we won't have to worry about the three-way tie.
