The field at Reynolds was one of the softest surfaces I have been on for a football game. The kids from Crest said they felt faster, who knows if that's true, but the kids did believe it. I do wonder though. I'm not sure , but on the sidelines, not the playing surface, it looked like a few seams were coming up. This turf has only been down a year so I would be concerned even with it being on the sidelines. I'm all for natural grass, but if it's something that Crest was going to do, I would wait a few more years and see if they improve on the current turf. If they make the improvements from this turf to the next, that they have from old turf, that will be something.

Anyone heard about the beach volleyball pit they're building right beside the football field at Ballantyne High School?

It's going to be known as...

    ...you guessed it...

    Surf and Turf!!!

I find it very sad that schools are spending 500 thousand and more on a product that is so untested. There are many issues with the new turf. The most striking is the heat that is retained by the rubber and sand in the the turf profile. In tests with natural turf ,on a 80 degree day natural turf has shown a temperature of the low 80's while the new turf has a temp of around 145 degrees. Just imagine the effect on the legs and bodies of the athletes. Also there are hygiene issues as well. Will the people in charge disinfect the field as needed. Gum, tobacco spit and other foreign objects are a huge concern. There are other issues as well. These fields must be watered to prevent slipping and to cool the turf. I could name many problems, but there are places where those considering such a field should do very lengthy research. I would be glad to help anyone concerning the new turf.
