    write ballplayers for autographs? The post about Don Carmen got me thinking. I still have the following autographed pictures of players that responded to my letters:

    Hank Aaron
    Rico Carty
    Dusty Baker
    Carl Yaz&$$$(&&*#
    Fred Lynn
    Jim Rice
    Lim Lonborg

    Can't say whether the signature are authentic or were done by a publicist but as a kid I can assure you that this never crossed my mind. I wonder if players still answer fan mail.

    First Fan Mail

    My son received his first stranger fan mail, I guess you would call it, this fall. His high school baseball coach gave him a letter that was sent to the school. In it the man (I believe it was a man by the writing and context) had stated he was a huge fan of his even though he had never seen him play. He had been reading about him on Baseball America, Perfect Game, etc. and wanted him to sign a 3x5 card he had enclosed because he thought he would be famous someday. He also said he wouldn't trade or sell it and was not an agent, scout or coach. He did enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope - that was thoughtful! He said my son was sooooo talented and he was very impressed, and that his future was bright.

    My son never replied but we still have the stuff. We just thought it was kinda creepy and weird - possibly a future potential stalker - I don't know.

    With the way people are stealing identities these days, we just didn't think it was the right thing to do. He's only a kid. Maybe we're just paranoid........

    It's funny you bring this up....when Ryan signed pro one of the things they were warned about was people trying to steal their signature....they talked about signing the "blank 3x5 card.

    The only one I remember writing to was Bob Lilly of the Dallas Cowboys. My little brother wrote to Roman Gabriel. Both of them responded with autograph pictures.

    I'll never forget what Roman wrote, "Winners never quit and quitters never win."

    Kind of corny, but obviously it made an impression on me.:redface:

    TigerMom I just wanted to say the same thing. There are people out there that will get you to sign the blank side of an index card then if you do make it big........... Guess who's autograph is almost worthless.
