A couple weeks ago, my DD had the opportunity to play 23U during the July4 Tournament in Raleigh. What a great experience! Not only did she get to play with the "who's who" of NC / SC college softball (all former local stars) but the level of ball, coaching, umpiring, was excellent.
Plus, there was no stress just softball for the love of the game. The players on the teams were from UNC, NC State, Campbell, USC Upstate, UNCC, ECU, other Div 1, 2 and 3 schools.

With the way the rules are changing in ASA and most "Major" Tournaments regarding returning College players in Championship play and the "lame duck" status of committed Seniors in Showcase ball - Is this the way of the future? I hope so. My DD learned alot, had alot of fun and we had a great time.

It seems like there are only a few teams (there were 4) and only a couple tournaments locally. This weekend, the team my DD played for (thanks Charlie!) is going to play in the Commonwealth Games in VA., where it seems that they have about a dozen teams playing in the 23U division.

I can certainly understand college players not wanting to commit to a whole schedule of summer ball, after 12 months of training and 60+ games in a season but, is it feasable to grow this division? I think so and certainly support getting more teams and a few more tournaments. Thoughts?

It sure was fun, these Girls CAN Play!

My view is the way to go . . .

is for ASA to do away with 23U designation and let anyone play. How's a 23 year-old any different than 24? I also think that this is where kids who are already committed should be playing. The competition these girls provide is far better than 18U. In fact, i think showcase 18U has deteriorated as the the number of teams has proliferated. There aren't enough quality players to go around. I saw some teams at the ASA qualifier in Raleigh that my DD's 2003 14U would have beaten.
