That kind of attitude is what is hurting travelball. Many many more girls playing fastpitch for fun not for the miniscule scholarship money that they can get. Dads like you just want to be able to say my dd got a scholarship. Makes you look big. NOT I'v been around this sport from the beginning. Had a dd who got a scholarship and a very successful college experience along with several of her friends. Her and everyone of her firends and aquanitances all say the fun years of playing were the games they played in nsa, ussssa ect. when they were playing for fun and trying to win the little "meaningless" tournaments. That is what is important not how many college coaches see them

Run That By Me Again !!

You just got through saying that your kid got a scholarship, so what's the argument ? I didn't say you couldn't have fun, but all serious players are the ones that---- well are SERIOUS !!! The showcase tournaments are for those that are college bound, not a day in the park !!

I believe that sometimes when you say you want the girls to have fun that some people interpret that to mean that they aren't expected to play as well or as hard. In reality, the girls are having fun when they are giving it their all. Fun doesn't mean you don't go all out; fun means you do go all out.

The references to rec ball I hear a lot and I assume it means that rec ball doesn't play tough. That's true for the most part. Because they don't know how yet. Probably one of the best things you can do for a rec team and some hs teams is to take them to a high level TB or college tournament and let them see for themselves the level of play.

One important thing to always keep in mind when looking at a novice player: every single player that plays started out a beginner. I've worked with seemingly hopeless kids that have blossomed into really tough and skilled players. The best feeling you can have coaching is when you see that transformation. Even if you were only a small part of it, it is why a lot of coaches keep coaching. It has to be the only reason I do it; most of the other rewards wouldn't be enough. And there are quite a few things that happen that make you feel like you shouldn't be coaching at all.

I do have mixed feelings about "showcase" ball. I think the various manipulations turn the sport more towards business than sport. I hate that, even though I understand its benefits. I feel like we could still have pure competition and the college coaches could still get what they need. But that's another thread that I believe has been worn out.

I'll just try to persevere and do the best I can for the next kid and the next until someone finally runs me off.

Great point. and correct, but I was replying to a post about a player being seen by college coaches.

.....IS something to consider more closely. Or atleast where in Charlotte the games are held. Its a shame when both parks, Mallard, and Ren. are subjected to HIGH crime. There is absolutely no excuse for these parks not to have security. I've stayed up the road at Wingate, and had stuff ripped off out of our trucks, mostly coolers, etc. One wallet was taken. At Jock and Jills parking lot in bright lights, CDs truck was broken into. I've gotta beleive that these things don't "just" happen at the ASAs. Find a safe place in the Charlotte area, cool, we'll be there. If not, show me security for my kids and our stuff. Otherwise, put the tourn. in another place, maybe Greensboro. Oh and Cary, they've got crime too. Whitecollar crime! lol. "the hard to catch" Fishman

I see NSA is doing some tournaments in Huntersville. Is the crime as bad there. I know our travel teams have strayed away from the Charlotte area. Nevins, Ren. and especially Hornets Nest because of the thugs. Nevins is right in the middle of "Cracktown" and Hornets Nest is a Latino gang hang out. Too many good complexes around the state especially in smaller towns that don't have a big crime problem to have the girls exposed to Charlotte's trash

I have played at Renaissance for 15 years, twice a week and never felt unsafe for myself or my 9 year old and 6 year old. I have never had a crime issue or felt unsafe. There are diverse crowds on the weekends, including soccer games, mountain bike riders, etc... but this diversity does not create a crime problem.

I have traveled with 8U teams to Renaissance and Nevin and never felt unsafe for myself and any of the girls.

I have a hard time believing that Renaissance or Nevin parks are unsafe during a weekend tournament with multiple teams playing and the softball crowd that travels to these events.

Perhaps the latino soccer board is making comments about the softball parents fighting at there parks and wanting to play elsewhere.

Charlotte's trash - easy big fella!

Don't blame a breaking and entering at a Wingate hotel on Charlotte parks and recreation. Wingate has nothing to do with Charlotte - it is several towns away. How many Charlotte or Monroe hotels did you drive by on your way to Wingate?

You cite two examples - one at a hotel two towns away from Charlotte and one at a sports bar away from the park.

Your point proves that there is crime everywhere - but no examples of crime at a Charlotte park during a tournament.

Do you expect the Charlotte tournament site to provide security at a hotel two towns away and at a restaurant?
