No outs runner on first. Pitcher pitchs ball hits home plate bounces over backstop out of play. Runner was not stealing. Field umpire gives runner 2 bases. Coach did question the call.

I believe it's only one base from the pitching rubber, two bases if the ball is thrown out of play from anywhere else. It's also from where the baserunner is at the time of the release, not when the ball leaves play.

Just one base. Apparently the coach should have protested and just not questioned.

    ASA Rules:

(Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch with stealing) When a pitched ball that remains
live becomes blocked or goes out of live ball territory.
    EFFECT
: The ball is dead and runners are awarded one base only. The

batter is awarded first base only on the fourth ball.

Our coach knew the rule but the ump wouldn't listen to him explain. Threatened him with restriction to the dugout, an ejection if he didn't leave the field.

That's when you use the word "protest." As in, "I'm lodging an official protest about a misapplication of the rules with plate umpire".
