Ashbrook clinched no worse than a tie for 1st place in the Big South 3A by defeating South Point at South Point 4-0, avenging an embarrassing defeat in the Observer Easter Tournament. Ashbrook has two games remaining and a win over Hunter Huss tomorrow or Forestview on Saturday will give Ashbrook the championship outright.

The game began as a pitching dual between South Point ace Matt Teague and Ashbrook sophomore Michael Bogaert. That is until the top of the 3rd inning when Kale Bradley lead off with a bloop single to center field. Josh Duncan then sacrificed Bradley to 2nd, bringing Sammy Asis to the plate. After a couple of pitches Asis drove a fastball over the right-center field fense to put the Wave up 2-0. That proved to be all the scoring that Ashbrook needed. Although, Ashbrook added two more runs before Teague was lifted by Mitch Harris in the 6th.

Bogaert pitched into the 4th inning but began to show signs of tiring. With two outs and the bases loaded, Coach Parks called on Wes McCall to close the door. And close it he did. McCall struck out Joe Springs to end the South Point threat and proceeded to strike out 6 of the 8 batters he faced garnering the save. It was McCall's opportunity to redeem himself after being manhandled by South Point in the Easter Tournament.

Kudos to the entire Ashbrook team for shutting out a potent South Point team after giving up 23 runs just a couple of weeks ago.

Ashbrook won the conference championship tonight by defeating Hunter Huss. East Lincoln played at South Point tonight. Forestview at East Gaston. Don't know the scores, but will update tomorrow morning.

Forestview plays a double header tomorrow against two different teams and so does North Gaston. East Lincoln still must play East Gaston on Friday or Saturday.

Yes, the Big South 3A Conference Tournament begins on Monday. Ashbrook has a bye and the other teams play at the higher seeds field. The semi-finals will be at Ashbrook next Wed. 5/14 and the finals on Thurs. 5/15. Ashbrook automatically qualifies as the top seed for the state playoffs and the tournament champion goes as the 2nd seed (unless Ashbrook wins the tournament). 2nd place in the conference and tournament are still up in the air!
