in my humble opinion, B tournaments have their place. many more teams are from small areas that are short on athletics and dont have the pool of players to draw from then say mech. county. how about a 12u team moving up to 14u, most are still 12, some 13. playing against seasoned 13 and 14yr old girls, chances are they're gonna get their butts beat. playing in the B bracket means they're playing against teams on the same level and can not only get better, it builds confidence and ya cant win without confidence. i've seen this happen in person (my team some years ago) and this team played in all A tournaments the next year and competed with the teams. at that age, one year older makes a heck of a difference. cometmom is right, we didnt enter these tournaments as a B team (except the world series and the Super NIT) we were assigned to the B due to our record.

    agreed

My DD was only filling in for a team that has had some injuries, but like Cometmom states the tournament was listed as a 4GG. Chuck also had his hands full waiting on the last pool game to seed ALL but 3 teams into brackets. I believe at one time there were 6 teams tied for the same seed in the same bracket. The team we were a part of missed the "A" bracket by one run. We only lost one game to a team that could have/ should have won the whole thing. Also, I noticed many solid 14u teams playing up at a 16u tourny. I say well done to those teams. I also know that many teams used this as a "tryout" tournament for new prospects. I will say that many of the teams in the "B" bracket could have won games in the "A" bracket. If the coaches do not know about A and B before the tourny starts, then they should not be judged.....my opinion. Everyone should want to be in the A bracket and try to win every game.

I AGREE WITH CHEEZE105 - WE PLAYED IN LAST WEEKS TOURNAMENT(WON 14/U DIVISION)...WE MOVED UP TO 14/U ABOUT 5 WEEKS AGO AND ONLY TO BETTER OURSELVES/TEAM. AS OF RIGHT NOW,4 OF MY GIRLS CAN STILL PLAY 12/U NEXT YEAR ...NOT SAYING WE HADN'T HAD A SUCCESSFUL YEAR AT 12/U(77W - 16L)...FOR MORAL PURPOSES-ITS NICE TO BE ABLE TO PLAY A COMPETITIVE GAME NOW AND THEN WHILE YOUR TEAM MAKES THIS TRANSITION.TRUST ME , WE'RE PLAYING MORE "A" TOURNAMENTS THEN "B"...OUR OTHER TEAM THAT WAS ALSO INVOLVED IN THIS TOURNAMENT HAS NOW BEEN TOGETHER 5 WEEKS...WHY THROW THEM TO THE DOGS? PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THIS IS TO BETTER THE GIRLS , NOT TO BEAT THEM INTO SUBMISSION. IT SEEMS TO ME , THAT A "B" TOURNAMENT HAS MORE "CONTROL" .YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO WORK ON WITHOUT BEING SO ONESIDED.

The top tournament does not say A or B, just a list of teams entered. The bottom tournament however, clearly states it is a Recreation B (or below .500) tournament. I am not taking away from any team listed on either tournament, just facts.

Nathan we knew before the tournament started that it was A and B and like someone said everyone is trying for A. I for one do not like splitting into A and B because like in Saturday's tourney one or two runs can decide who goes where. On any given day anyone can loose or win and they should have the chance to make up for a bad pool game in the bracket. There were a lot of good teams there this weekend and after the first couple of teams it was close but A and B was known before game time. Also not real sure I understand the could have/ should have thing.

I was not in any way downplaying your team. You guys are great and we have cheered you for years, so do not read more into it please. The whole "could have/ should have" was giving props to Buster Hill's Lady Blues whom WE lost to our first pool game. I do not have issues with any team at the tourny. Kip's Lady Blues team also had a few calls that changed the whole momentum of the game. The Lady Blues and the Storm were the best two teams out there Sunday no question. Both played their hearts out. Don't be so defensive, we know the Storm is good and wish them luck. By the way, every tournament we've ever been in together my whole family sits near your team parents and help cheer your team on.

    "A" or "B".......same Prize?

"A" or "B" in most tournaments you get the same prize, what is that all about. Some coaches shoot for the "B" bracket and that way they have a better chance at winning. I have seen this done plenty of times and I think until the tournament director's start making the prize better or different from what the "B" division gets, then it really takes away from the winner of the tournament. This weekend, only difference in trophy was the letter "A."

Nathan yes you have and we have appreciated that; I only was looking for clarification for discussion sake. I did not take it personal or as a dig on anyone sorry if that came across. I have to agree with you on the Hill team we played them in a close 2-1 game.

    Wow.

Here is what you are saying - Let's have a 12 team tournament with 144 girls playing. Let's limit it to one winner with 12 girls enjoying the thrills of victory and 132 experiencing the agony of defeat. That'll teach them life's lessons. If you are not good enough to win at the highest level - go play rec ball.

In High School, are the 3A, 2A, 1A state champions supposed to hang their heads because they did not play 4A - the "real" classification?

Are the CEOs of locally owned business supposed to be embarrased that they are extremely successful but do not work for a Fortune 500 company - the "real" companies?

What you are missing is the fact that you already have A, B, C and D divisions in softball - even if they are not labeled as such. You have Gold which would be A - should everyone who can't compete on the gold level pack it up and play rec ball? Wow - that would exclude a lot of quality girls.

Other sanctions (such as AAU and WFC) are less competitive - so there is your C & D brackets. Have you ever been proud of winning any of their tournaments - I know my daughter shows off her WFC state championship trophy proudly.

What is the harm of structuring a tournament so more girls get to walk off the field as champions?
