I was at a turfgrass conference group tour recently (held at the new Greensboro minor league park). There was much discussion / comments about the general difficulties encountered in scheduling baseball field maintenance with coaches. Apparently there is a delicate balance between the amount of maintenance time needed to provide a first-class & safe playing surface vs. the time the teams need the fields for practice.

Any comments on actual experiences you have encountered?

At my son's HS, there is no problem because the coach is the caretaker, and he does an excellent job. Down the road, another school uses a city owned stadium that is maintained by the city. The HS coach must get permission for anything he wants to do at the stadium. There is a big difference in how these two facilities look.

Yeah...the same here in Charlotte. The baseball coaches take care of their own fields (for the most part). I know this, nobody walks on to the Bagdome, unless they are doing some kind of field maintenance...and even then, Coach Bagwell is going to supervise. Coach Greeson at East Meck is the same way. And if Danny Hignight had a choice he would demolition Providence and start all over. It's a nice field, with great sight lines, but it is waaaaay too small.

Coach Billings at Hopewell lords over his field also. Young and not married yet, he dedicates a phenomenal amount of time and his own money to the field. This winter so far the rye grass is not comming up like he expected, so I fear for the safety of the seed company officials. If he can't resolve it, he may go postal on the seed company.

My hat is off to all of the coaches who go the extra mile and take pride in the facility their teams play on. Incidentally you can go to the Hopewell website and see pictures of the latest upgrades. www.hopewelltitansbaseball.com

The seed rep came out and said we didn't apply enough seed:77321_bs: as we bought it from him and bought the recommended amount. We are thinking bad seed also.

    Independence field

Coach Coltrane puts in a good effort and many times uses his own money for our field but in the off season it is used as a practice football field and the last two years their has been some problem with the irrigation system that just seems to take tooooo long to fix. We did have a parent workday and have scheduled another one so hopefully the facilities will be a bit better. We are hoping to have our own concession stand this year rather than selling items out of a golf cart.
