Baseball Coaches Best Off Season Practices

    What are some of your best practices for the off season in baseball? How many days a week do you lift? How many days do you devote to skill development? What type of plyometrics does your team do? What are some ways to increase your athletes 60's? Just trying to open this up for a good old fashion TBR discussion.

    Coach- For us, it depends on what TIME of the off-season.

    In the fall, we have one open field a week so our younger players can get some work in. The upper classmen generally take charge and organize things, since coaches can't be involved. Our 8-man workouts consist of hitting in the cages, individual position-specific defensive drills, live hitting at times, team D and pitchers throwing pens. We also do plyometrics (medicine balls, jump ropes, ladders, box jumps, JOBE exercises, etc.) as part of our work. Generally, we'll have two infield groups, one outfield group and one JV-level group per week, with all these groups having subs in case someone can't go and open sign up slots to make sure we get eight each time (although that doesn't always happen).

    In the winter, our system is very similar except for two major changes: One, our 8-man groups starting hitting live pitching (especially later in the winter prior to tryouts) and two, we do a lot more charting of pitches, speeds on the gun (pitchers, pop times, and infielders), etc. Basically, we start taking the general approach of the fall when we are looking to get rid of bad habits to more individual-focused workouts that help each guy get ready to compete for a roster spot.
    We don't do a lot of weightlifting, but most of my players are already in weight training classes (although most could use a LOT more work, as I'm sure most coaches would agree!). Skill development, teamwork, arm/body conditioning and mental/physical prep are the focal points for us.
