Don't forget about Garinger HS in Charlotte. For most of the 60's 70's and part of the 80's, that school had one of the most successful high school programs in the state. Garinger also sent more players to play college and pro ball than any other high school in NC. Didn't gary Robinson coach there for over 10 years?

Gary played at Garinger but to my knowledge has never coached high school baseball until his short stay at Highlands two-three years ago.

Garinger was top-notch when Terry Brewer was the coach there. He was a field man. Same for Harding when Chet Greeson was there. Now look what Chet's done at East meck.

    Joe Tomanchek

Joe Tomanchek was at Garinger in the 60's and early 70's, as I recall. He produced some outstanding players in Garry and Ronnie Hill, Skip Hull, David Lemonds, Bryan Little and others. I don't remember if he was coach of Legion Post 9.

All the Garinger players were studs, O. Don't remember the stud to which you refer. Give us a clue. Oh, Garinger had a strong football program back in the 60's, too. They'd play South Meck at Memorial and draw 15,000. Ah, the good ole days.

    Coach Tomanchek

Coach Tomanchek was at Garinger until 1977 or 1978. He was a tough hardnosed coach. If he would have been a football coach, he would have been another Mike Ditka (without the facial hair...not allowed on his teams). I really don't think today's kids and parents could play for or understand a coach like Coach Tomanchek. Just too much disclipline and he really did not care for the parents or their opinions. No team dared a team to squeeze against Garinger because the batter would always get one in the ear hole, end of squeeze. The only coach I know of today who is anywhere close to a discliplarian is Coach Wershing at Bishop McGuiness HS in Winston-Salem.

Over the years, I believe Tomanchek had at least 10 of his players sign pro contracts (3 or 4 made it to the show) and probably twice that many played in college. I'm sure he won countless conference and regional titles and a few state titles over his 18 years.

Brick , I believe was drafted by the Mariners, and ended his career with the Astro's. Garinger also had Mark Davidson, who played at UNCC and Clemson before he got a ring with the Twins. He also played in the bigs with theAstros.
