Bat Speed Ratings for Fastpitch Girls:

At the Carolina Hitting Camp this past weekend they had a station with a device that gave a MPH rate on your bat speed. Each girl had 5 swings without the ball being pitched. I watched this and saw numbers between 40 MPH up to 68 MPH.

What bat speed is considered poor, average, good and excellent for high school players & college players.

I have some limited info, and I dont have tons of back up info.

Year before last, my dd went to a 3day clinic, given by hitting coach that coaches around the nation. (The tennessee volunteers really like him, he quite letters on the wall from various institutions. A really nice guy, energetic, very positive). he goes by the name coach Nemo, you can search this and find info. I would just add but think it may violate a posting rule and advertisement. His methods are about bat speed and that is his tradmark.

So, my kid at 14 was swinging 60. He said that was a higher than avg highschool number.

He is a super nice guy and if you wrote him, he would respond. tell Kim Ryder sent you. Two years later he remembers ever kid its amazing. so he might be able to give you some realistic numbers.

57-58 MPH Bat Speed, Good Power, DII offers

My daughter is a Senior and had a bat speed of 57-58 MPH at UNC. She has good power! She is a Thirdbasemen is 5'7 weighs 165 and hit 5 homeruns this year. She has some DII offers, no D1 offers yet.

60 Mph will be her goal this year. 1 or 2 MPH doe's not sound like a lot but is a big difference. I did see a couple girls swing at 62 MPH. I did not see anyone swing at mid 60's or 68 MPH.

    Softball Bat Speed

We were clocking baseball players in a indoor facility and the 8th to 10th graders were ranging between 65-81 mph. Then the freshman college student top out at 94 mph.
Then we clocked one of the best softball hitters (HS senior) in the area, she topped out at 73 mph but range was 68-73 on about 10 swings. This was with little warm up. I believe she can do better than this! She has very good power; line drive hitter with home run power. I believe she will be able to play DI.
Any college coaches that need any information on this girl, please PM me.

I just can't believe that someone out there doesn't have the target numbers for swing speed at the college level! Is it because this is something kind of new?

My DD was 64-65 at the unc camp, she's a soph, and one of her hs teammates, a junior, is above 70, up to 75 and is getting looks from a number of D-I's.

    CALL THE COACH!

    Hello,
If you were at UNC, call Coach Papa and ask her! The only thing that is important is "what is she looking for?", so ask her.

When you consider bat speed. Do you use a Bat that measures the swing speed? I had picked up a swing speed bat per say. Its long and narrow and from what I understand about it, it would be used by a golfer. Is this the same thing or is it in the shape of a bat?

first, I've emailed one of the unc coaches and asked

second, you swing the bat you hit with. Anything else wouldn't matter! I could probably swing a tobacco stick pretty fast... but I couldn't hit a ball with one worth a darn!

Troop... they measured it with a radar gun.. swing through a zone that picks up the speed.

I have to ask.... excuse me if this is a dumb question.

With the move to have half the lineup slapping
....and the importance of ball placement on the field so high
....and hitting homeruns rather rare(as a percentage of total team "at-bats")
why is bat speed so important?

It would seem that putting bulleyes on the field and measuring how well a batter can place a ball in the bulleyes on demand would be a far greater measurement of batter performance that a single element measurement such as bat speed.
