Satchel Paige's control was so good that he could throw strikes using a book of matches for a plate. Who had the best control/command this season in NC ?

Using the stats from Impact, the two leading candidates for control are:

    Jason Rook, W Guilford (2A)
    Tom Porter, North Meck (4A)

Rook in 48 2/3 innings has walked 11 while striking out 95
Porter in 42 1/3 innings has walked 9 while striking out 76

Josh Dowdy, Garrett Bullock, Tyler Leech and Josh Thrailkill are all excellent and right behind them in numbers.

The West Henderson entire staff has walked 33 in 143 innings, or 1.6 per game.

    CONTROL

    For East Rutherford :
    Blake Bostic (JR)has thrown 77 innings and walked 8 batters. (69 K's)
Michael Melton (SO) has thrown 45 innings and walked 6. (58 K's)

The staff as a whole has thrown 176 innings and walked 38.

    Better be swinging!

That's 1.5 per game, Excellent. Hope we get the opportunity to swing, guess you hope we get the opportunity also. That would mean we both won the 1st 2.

Thanks. There seems to be a strong correlation between control pitchers and elite HS programs. With so much emphasis on velocity, that's kind of interesting.
Bostic's numbers are unreal. That's one walk per 9.6 innings !

Loss of control-early warning sign ?

In Will Carroll's book, Saving the Pitcher, he says the first symptom of elbow problems before pain or tightness is loss of control. I had not heard that before but saw it happen first hand this season.

The scouts love velocity til the recruit or prospect arrives. Then it's all about wins and getting people out. I have never understood why a kid with a little less velocity, that comes from a winning program, that knows how to get people out gets overlooked so much. Winning and losing are both attitudes that are developed over time. It is much harder to get a winner to accept losing, than a loser to accept winning. Well so much for my soapbox. Sorry to stray from the intent of the thread.

You never know, maybe this is
From what I can tell, velocity far outweighs control even at the HS level.

I have heard (and I would have to agree) that the three parts of a pitch, in order of importance (at any level) are:

    1- Location
    2- Movement
    3- Velocity

I'd say if you have good control, you can take care of location.
