Cherryville the year they went to the World Series, that's a no brainer. What year was that?

The Wilmington teams during the years of Trot Nixon and Erik Faulk were pretty dern good.

Pitt County was loaded back with Ryan Gordon and those boys.

I believe it was Post 9 from Charlotte, won the World Series in 1965. Bob Rhodes, coach at Olympic, played on that team. Bob says until they got to the World Series, which is the last 8 teams in the country, they never played anybody tougher than Post 380-Morris Field in Charlotte. He says that year he felt either team from Charlotte could have won it all. But they had to play each other to get out of the state tournament.

    best teams

The Cherryville team that you are talking about that went to the world series was about 2 or 3 years ago. Chris Mason pitched for them and he set a bunch of records on the way to the world series. I believe he set the record for most strikeouts in the State tournemant as well as world series. They were very dominant. Usually some of the teams down east are sometimes solid. But i would have to say the Cherryville team that went to the world series a few years ago has to be one of the best.

    Rowan County 2002

Those Cherryville teams were excellent, I think that they are the obvious choice. After that I would say that the state champion team of Rowan County in 2002 was very close. They were by far the best defensive team that I've ever seen in high school. Led by Cal Hayes at short Drew Davis behind the plate and the trio of Catawba kids Rimer Lefko and Jimbo Davis in the outfield. They also had a good pitching staff in Julian Sides, Patrick Adams, Spencer Steedley. That year Rowan County went 43-2 did not lose in the area playoffs and won the state championship with a clean sweep. Unfortunately they had some hard luck in the regional. They won their first three games and in the first year of the new format were forced into a single elimination semifinal game. They ran into a stud and got beat for only the second time all summer 4-3 (score may be wrong, but it was a one run affair). I would think that they would have to rate up there with one of the best teams in recent memory.

43-2, sounds like they didn't play many down-eastern teams. ;)

I remember that year though, Rowan was extremely tough. What is Cal Hayes up to these days?

In 76 & 77 Newell won back to back state titles and were never threaten in the state.About everyone went on to play college ball and several played in the bigs..Most kids were from Garinger and Independence.
