The Road To Las Vegas 1998

Cherryville Post 100 played in 39 post season games on their way to the World Series Championship. Back then the first three rounds were 3 out of 5. Cherrryville defeated Watauga, Shelby, and Paw Creek. Rounds four through six were the best of seven. Cherryville beat Caldwell County in six games, Rowan County in six games for the western finals championship, and Pitt County in seven games for the state title. 140 runs were scored in the state finals with Cherryville winning games six and seven by the same score of 10-9.
In the Southeast Regionals, Cherryville went 3-1 in pool play to reach the finals. They beat Charleston S.C. 10-3 for the title. At the World Series in Las Vegas, Cherryville also went 3-1 in pool play. Cherryville played Edwardsville, Ill. for the Championship which was seen on ESPN.

Burlington had two outstanding pitchers a couple years ago. Nick Starnes (drafted but went to UNCG and redrafted this year I think) and Brandon Perry (drafted by the Mariners I think). My guess is, that if you're talking about the curveball, you're talking about Perry. One of the best left-handed curves I've ever seen. I was coaching for Lexington back then and he struck out 18 of our guys one night at their place (one guy 5 times). I also think he struck out 20+ King batters that year as well.

I think the one we were looking for was Nick Starnes.

The curves i mentioned was Greenballz thorn in his side.
Very good bat with power but couldnt wait on that slow stuff.

    Burlington Team

Actually the Burlington team in 2002 had several good arms. Unfortunately we only had Brandon Perry for two games before the draft. Those numbers someone else quoted against Lexington and King were the summer before in 2001. Nick Starnes was on that team as well as Zack Booker who is now pitching at UNCW. That team also had David Sappelt when he was a young freshman and Blake Jordan who is now catching at Pfeiffer. I was very fortunate to coach that bunch.
