I think that you were referring to Nick Starnes who is at UNCG. Was a seventh round draft choice by the Braves that year. They also had Brandon Perry earlier that summer. He was drafted in the 15th round or so. He never pitched for them in the playoffs.

Cal Hayes is in A ball in the Cards organization JM15

some of the best legion teams i have watched are as follows

The 1978- 79 legion teams from Salisbury - coach Ferebee, Coe Brier, Tim Kirk,Kelly Gordy, Mike Lippard

The 79 team from Hamlet that beat Salisbury - Coach Whitfield, Franklin Stubbs who is managing the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

The early 80's team from Concord that may have been the most loaded team i have ever seen This team was disqualified on a paper work technicality protested by Salisbury which enabled Salisbury to enter the playoffs and then go on to win the state championship.Scott Irby, the Reilly brothers, Mike Reinhart, Donnie Poplin (scout with Atlanta) Mark Davis

85 team from Whiteville - Patrick Lennon, Tommy Greene.

02 Rowan County team - Calvin Hayes, Nick Leffco, Drew Davis, Bobby Parnell Arron Reimer, and many others.

The teams from Cherryville that featured Ralph Roberts, and the team that featured Chris Mason. Cherryville had a real good team in the early 80's that featured Fortenberry, and Long

    1986 Caldwell county team

Wilmington had some good years also, I beleive Wilmington beat Kernersville the year Trot Nixson and Shawn Gallagher played.

I have seen alot of good teams that did not win a state championship Late 70 early 80's teams from Asheboro coached by Martin Smith

1989 team From Mocksville coached by Dale Ijames

Kernersville teams coached by Dale Ijames, and Lance Sparrow.

Let's here some thoughts on some other teams that i left out.

The Wilmington Post 10 teams in the mid 90's were unbelieveable. Just to name a few of their players: Trot Nixon (Red Sox), Fletcher Bates(Mets), Eric Faulk (A's), Shawn Gallager(Rangers), Chris Moore(WCU), Tony Pigott(Elon), Jason Napier(Elon), Chris Lemarsh(UNC), Cather? (ECU). I know in 1994 they lost in the World Series, because Pigott was a teammate of mine in college and was late coming to school.

The Kernersville teams during that time coached by Greg Starbuck were also outstanding. Some of their players were Scott Brendle(Elon), Kirby Keene(Elon), Greg Payne(Catawba), Rusty Larue(WFU), Brad Beeson(UNCG&Elon), Joe Legard(Dodgers), just to name a few.

There are a couple teams from Eastern Randolph in the early to mid 90's that do not get the credit they deserve.

In response to your question, Brandon Perry was released by the Kansas City Royals organization about two weeks ago. He is trying to get on with other teams as we speak.

I was a teammate of GP at Catawba and he always spoke highly of the Wilmington team that Trot was on. They played each other in the State Finals one year (before the current format) and had a real battle. Both of those teams were dang good. You should know - Elon in those days was 90% K-ville and Wilmington.

    got to be cherryvill

Has any other teams from the state made it to the world series in recent history? The two team they sent were powerhouses loaded with offense and one great pitcher on each squad. NO BRAINER!!!!! Some of the greatest games come from these runs!!!!! And the Caldwell series were tremendous down in 2003 series 3 to 1 and come back and won. Beat some good teams along the way but no one could put up the runs with them!!!!!!! I Think I heard that the shot the Hurt boy hit in game six has finally landed in Caldwell some where :flaming: :detonate:

I'm gonna throw in the Shelby Post 82 team that won the national championship just because they won it.

Also the Post 82 team that was in the SE Regional a couple of years ago. That was a very talented team and a lot of people lay it at the feet of Mike Grayson that this squad didn't advance to the World Series.

Cherryville with out a doubt has had some great squads.
