Really though, nobody's picks can be dismissed. That's what makes baseball so fun when these discussions are posted. There are so many players that you can make a case for, but in all honesty, there is no one that has done more for baseball than Ruth. The times he has rescued the sport from oblivion has never been matched. During and after the Black Sox scandal baseball nearly folded and the public's interest died. Ruth singlehandedly saved baseball during that scandal and the country's depression. That's why he could make the comment when a writer asked him how he felt about making more money than the President and Ruth answered truthfully, "I had a better year." In my opinion, Ruth was the most important and dynamic player to have ever played.

So far all the guys mentioned were great ballplayers. That is why this is a great debate. The saying that Babe Ruth save baseball is a strong statement. Please correct me if i am wrong but wasn't the negro leagues going strong, and in the eyes of blacks that too was baseball. Babe Ruth was a very interesting character as well as a great ball player. Here is my starting line up.
    Catcher- Johnny Bench
    1st- Willie Mccovey
    2nd- Rhyne Sandburg
    ss- Ozzie Smith
    3rd- Brookes Robinson
Lf- Hank Aaron ( played entire career as a RF) could not leave off Roberto Clemente
    CF- Willie Mays
    RF- Roberto Clemente
DH-Mickey Mantle ( those four would rotate)
    RP- Bob Gibson
    LP- Steve Carlton
That's a tough team to beat.

FYI Hank Aaron played over 200 games at 1B, 2B, and 3B during his career! He also was DH when he went back to Brewers!

Since the topic seemed to be about MLB players, I thought the subject topic remained the same..MLB. But let me re-phrase it...the copyrighted name Major League Baseball is what I was referring to that Ruth saved. I didn't think anyone would infer I was speaking about any other league(s).

Of the players I've seen: This is my lineup

    1st B- Willie Stargell
    2nd B- Bobby Grich
    SS - Ernie Banks
    3rd B- Mike Schmidt
    Catcher- Johnny Bench
    OF - Ken Griffey
    OF - Willie Mays
    OF - Roberto Clemente

    P - Sandy Koufax
    P - Ferguson Jenkins

such a shame he was taken away from us too early. I know he was at the tail end of his career but he had a lot more to give to baseball and the world. One of the best ever no doubt.

Braves, I have seen him pitch so I can assume that you have as well, while Koufax is without a doubt one of the best lefty's ever, my choice has to be Warren Spahn. 363 wins is hard to beat! I like Joe Morgan at second!
