from some posts, it sounds like some HS's have booster clubs for individual sports, like a baseball booster club or a football booster club, etc.

At these schools, is there also an overall booster club that represents & functions for all sports?

Also....assuming that the initial booster club efforts started with a single "all-sports" club, why was the decision made to have clubs for individual sports?

I can only speak for South Meck. Yes, they have an "all sports" booster club that most of the money is funneled to football and basketball...then you have a baseball "Booster" club that raises money specifically for that sport. An example of something they did for the baseball team was volunteering to run booth(s) at the Panther's games. They raised something like $15-20,000 doing this. The purpose of the baseball booster club was to ensure that the team received monies that was needed that would not have come from the school's booster club. Other sports, like lacrosse, do the same thing.

In order for it to be successful, you must have an aggressive leader and the supporters must be active and committed....and the same goes for the coach.

Rocky Mount also has a main booster club which is run very well. Each sport usually has its own mini fundraisers to complement the overall fundraising. Braves is correct about the leadership. It takes a committed effort to keep booster clubs going. People do not usually just walk up offering money.

I was a booster club president for four years (my son graduated in 1997). At his school, the principal wanted all money raised by the booster club to go to him and he would decide how it was distributed. When he was told no, that's not how it's going to work, he pretty much quit having anything ot do with the booster club. This all happened before I became invloved.

We had several of the "baseball parents" actively involved in the booster club so baseball got what they needed within our budget. We also supplied manpower for field maintenence on and around the ballpark. I had a very good relationship with the AD who is now at another school and we are still friends. He never called me and asked for money. But he did call quite a few times and tell me "We have an opportunity.....", like the day he found a deal on a 96" cut 5 gang reel mower that I told him to go buy and we'd have the meeting to approve it later.

I guess where the moeny is spent is influenced by the parents who participate actively in the booster club.
