Back when I coached the little guys and we had "on field" practices, I would tell them to leave the bats at home because we were only going to work on defense. What I tried to teach was that in little league we needed 18 outs to win a game. We only needed one run to win that same game! So whether it's 18 in little league, 21 in high school or 27 in college/pro ball my team still just needs one run to win... but we need more outs as the players advance up the baseball ladder... so give me defense!

Now if we have no pitching we better be able to mash some too!

Two years ago Lumberton finished third in the state with a team made up of three above average pitchers, solid defense and a bunch of banjo hitters who could run. Their 27-3 record pretty much proved to me that defense and pitching were the cornerstone of a great team.

Put me down for the great fielder/average hitter, and I think most pitchers would agree. Pitchers think they only need one run and some "glove love" anyway.

Remember Offense sells tickets, while defense wins championships

    Great Hitting...all day long!

It is well known that hitting a round ball with a round bat coming at you at 90 + MPH is the hardest thing to do in all of sports. I'll take great hitting with an average defense all day long.

There has been some good comments on this. I like the fact that there is not one clear answer and each person has supported their opinion.

I guess my thoughts about the pitchers is this. At least in HS you don't see too many 90+ pitchers, but as a hitter I would prefer to face those guys vs the junk ball pitcher with location...I hate hitting against those guys. The true FB pitcher; it's a matter of timing to adjust to that speed, but if it is flat....no real problem. Plus, as a coach, I love to play small ball if warranted.

One thing that drives me crazy as a coach or player is giving 4 or 5 out innings. It kills your pitching and can mentally kill your team.
