Butler vs West Charlotte tonight at Butler. My prediction - West Charlotte by 5.

I am going to attach an article published in the Charlotte Observer regarding tonight's game.

Did anyone see these two teams at Super Saturday? Any predictions?

    More Information

South Mecklenburg girls basketball coach Troy Gaston thinks tonight's West Charlotte at Butler game could be a special moment for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
“This is the game everybody's been talking about since summer,” Gaston said. “I think this will go down as one of the biggest, if not the biggest game ever here in town.”
West Charlotte, the defending Western Regional champion, is No. 2 in the Sweet 16. No. 1 Butler, which lost to the Lions in the N.C. 4A sectional final last year, has reloaded with a lineup that includes six major Division I recruits.
Tonight's game will feature 15 college recruits, including one of the nation's top five sophomore girls (Butler's Cierra Burdick), and in the stands will be legendary Tennessee women's coach Pat Summitt. Coaches from Duke, South Carolina and other Carolinas colleges have called Butler officials about possibly attending the 6 p.m. game.
“This kind of talent on the floor together is unheard of,” Hopewell coach Gary Richmond said. “It surpasses most any boys game we've had around here. I know tradition doesn't dictate it, but I bet people would rather this girls game be the last game and the boys tip off first.”
Morganton Freedom coach Amber Fox is rearranging her practice time so she can make the near-two-hour drive to Matthews to see it.
“It's going to be one of the biggest matchups in North Carolina in awhile,” she said. “There are so many kids in that game who are at the top of our sport. A lot of people are expecting one of these two to be in the state finals and I think this kind of game, right now, is good for our sport and our whole state.”

I watched them both several times at Super Saturday. It will be hard to predict a winner as both are very, very talented and well coached. Kind of leaning toward West Charlotte by 6 though. Butler could easily win by double digits. Not pulling for either team and really don't care who wins. Just going to sit back and enjoy the talent on the floor tonight.

Beat me to it.. ENjoyed the game tonight. It almost had the feel of a Freedom- McDowell game. Still short a thousand fans though..

Claire Watkins was by far the best player on the floor tonight. West Charlotte did not have a answer for her. SHould be interesting the rest of the way for these two and several others that want to make some noise in 4A. I wouldn't hand it to Butler quiet yet....

    Agree

I agree, Freedom. Glad to hear your thoughts. This was the best crowd for a Charlotte game that I have ever seen - but not as strong as what I have seen at McDowell and Freedom. The gym was packed and near capacity about 30 minutes prior to tipoff.

Butler established themselves as a contender, certainly not a front runner!

Watkins was dominant underneath for Butler with 22 points. Her improvement from 2007 to 2008 is drastic. Butler missed Donavant tonight, as the lack of point guard depth hurt late in the fourth quarter. Stewart played her typical smooth game.

For West Charlote, Burton was extremely impressive with 28 points. Her ability to take the defender to the basket was incredible. They did not shoot very well from 2 point range but nailed their 3 pointers. It seemed to me that they were still struggling to mesh with the addition of Freeman in the lineup - this will be worked out and they will be stronger by playoff time.

Great, entertaining game played with toughness, agressiveness and class!

It continues to amaze me how entertaining these girls basketball games are in North Carolina. Best $5.00 night you can imagine!
