Campbell U. baseball coach resigns

Chip Smith has resigned as Campbell baseball coach, athletics director Stan Williamson announced on Wednesday.

Smith, who guided the Camels for 11 seasons, plans to enter the business field.
Chris Wiley will serve as interim baseball coach through the 2007 season. Campbell will begin its search for a new coach immediately and plans to announce a hiring in June.
Smith leaves the program as Campbell's all-time leader with 267 coaching wins. His record was 267-339-1 at Campbell. Including eight years as coach at Pfeiffer, Smith's overall mark over 19 seasons is 439-492-2.
"We appreciate Chip Smith and his efforts in building the Campbell baseball program over these last 11 years; we wish Chip the very best in all his future endeavors," Williamson said in a news release. (From Campbell News Release)

I think there is a little more to it than that... He was forced out the first time.

 

I should have said this is his second time LEAVING the program. I don't know the circumstances just wanted to confirm that he has left before. Sorry if my choice of words was incorrect.

 

You have to realize how hard a decision this would have been for a guy who has eleven years at one program. At a lower level div 1 school like campbell after a decade of service he is probably making a base salary of 40-45K and a few extra off whatever camp money he can get.

He's at a school that has relatively unimpressive facilities and winning takes a backseat to running a clean program that graduates it's players. Not a truly envious position looking in from the outside. It's very hard to win in a program that is not expected to or not given the proper resources.

As more and more small colleges are looking to baseball to help improve the school's overall image and desirability, if Campbell has any desire to ever have a solid winning program, they will have to spend some real money, (facilities, salaries, etc.)

 

agreed! Just hope Campbell's baseball will recover and not get lost now that Campbell is bringing back football, even though it is non scholarship from what understand.

They are going to have to do some great recruiting with $$$$ to get there program on track. There are some very smart baseball players out there who would thrive at a place like Campbell but some serious recruiting money and facility money needs to be found!!!

I believe Campbell is on track with the recruiting that Kent Cox did the last couple of years. The school is building a new convocation center with new sport offices and weight room. Time will tell.

Campbell is a great school with a degree that's up there with the Duke's and the Davidson's. I agree with you that they had a pretty good recruiting class last year also. But when you start talking about a new convocation building being a project that is gonna help the baseball program, how does that compare to say a UNC renovating their stadium this summer, or a Wake Forest offering 10 million for Ernie Shore. The reality is that Campbell and a top level D1 is apples and oranges. Campbell has a pretty nice D2 facility. bottom line....

The facilities help get the the recurits but the players still win the games. I think Duke's program is an example of having it all and still not getting it done. I think the larger schools have the depth to do better in the series,but in a one game event,I'm not so sure.....how's that for apple and oranges. A good recruiter like Coach Cox can get a program moving in the right direction.
