Based on runs allowed, and other teams in the Elite 8, the Carolina Cubs have finished 5th out of 200+ teams at the World Wood Bat Championships in Atlanta,GA. Throughout the whole week, the Cubs played OUTSTANDING baseball, against a VERY tough pool. Kevin Brandt (Fuquay/ECU), Ryan Walker(Orange/UNCW), Mark Peterson(Sanderson/UNCG) and Lance Honeycutt(Triton/ECU) were the stars on the mound, as the Cubs allowed less than 10 runs in 8 games. Leading the way offensively were Thomas Pope(Clinton/UNCW), Corey Thompson(Apex/ECU) and Jeremy Dowdy(Wakefield/App State). Cameron Conner(Fuquay/NCSU) and '09 Ethan Strickland(Triton/Unsigned) both went big fly during the week. The Cubs won their pool outright, and advanced to the field of 32. In game 1, they defeated the Team Elite by a score of 2-0. In game 2, they defeated a VERY tough Mississippi Select team by a score of 5-3. In their 3rd game of the day the Cubs came up against a tournament favorite Florida Bombers squad. The game went scoreless for 3 innings until the Bombers had a big 4th inning, but the Cubs scratched back scoring 3, but eventually coming up short 5-3. It was an EXCELLENT showing by the Cubs and they showed why they have to be considered one of the most talented teams in the Southeast. Congrats Cubs!!
