Catcher throwing to 3B on a steal attempt....

The ump has to believe that the batter intentionally stayed in the way in the batters box to get the interference call. I was trying to be funny[not very well though]. But you are right if they are out of the box then interference is automatic. If they make some attempt to be out of the way but stay in the box they have a better chance of beating the rap. But it may take a coach with a good knowledge of the rules to get it done.

 

...in front of the batter. Given you want the throw to be inside while simultaneously eliminating a possible batter interference that is not called.... catcher has more control all the way around by being out in front of the box.

9 times out of 10 you need to go behind the batter. It is the most natural play (IMO), like some has stated you might have to knock the (blank) out of the batter, but if they are taught properly they should stay put in the box. Lastly, I feel like going in front of the plate takes longer, a lot of times you have to come out farther to clear the plate and (the batter if stayed in the box) to avoid sliding on it. The catcher needs to make the correct read. Watch how the majors do it. (NEVER PUT THE CALL INTO THE UMPIRE'S HANDS, MOST OF THE TIME IT'S NOT GOING TO BE A GOOD OUTCOME)

on where the pitch is and where the batter takes her stance in the box. If the pitch is inside more likely an easier path behind the batter... the rest of the scenarios extrapolate from there. KNOWING where she is going before the pitch on a steal of third is what makes the difference between a great receiver and a good one...

its the chicken or the egg. some coaches teach to take a drop step and fire behind the batter and others teach the step forward. whatever works to get the out and what ever your catcher is more comfortable doing is the only correct way to make that play in my opinion

I have always been taught to set up closer to the plate and go in front on the outside pitch and set up a little deeper on the inside pitch and go behind, but it also depends on how the batter sets up. Good luck to everyone on getting the batter interference call when the batter bails and interferes with the cather. I once got tossed for arguing that with an ump. Take it from a former baseball ump that had the priviledge of calling several state championship games, there is not too many things more frustrating than arguing with an ump that doesn't know the rules of the sport he/she is officiating!

This is the best way to go not only do you not have to worry about the batter but that ump thats on your back.
