Catcher vs Coach Calling Pitches

    Both sides of the argument are understandable. If a catcher doesn't have the intelligence to call pitches then by all means, don't let her. It could very well ruin the game. But, on the other hand, if coaches are always calling the pitches then how are the catchers supposed to get their experience and learn how to call themselves? My coach used to call pitches every game from 10u till about middle of 14u. Then, he would let me start calling during the middle of a game where we were way ahead or the whole game if we knew ahead of time that the opposing team wasn't up to our caliber. I can tell you from first hand experience that this is the way to go. I learned how to call pitches and to read the batter by her feet, hands, swing, and placement in the box. If you don't let your catchers try, they're never going to learn.
