Since North Carolina will not allow teams to parcipitate in more than 4 games a week Noth Davidson and CC cannot play in the tournament. Only get to play in 3 games before pool play starts.

    Softball elite converge on Gibbs
Varsity Classic lures teams from area, Kentucky, North Carolina

    By MARK BURGESS, [email protected]
    April 2, 2004

Visions of Augusta National and the first round of the Masters will have to wait for Gibbs High School softball coach Carol Mitchell.

That comes next week when Mitchell and her husband take some rare springtime off for a glimpse of golfing greatness.

First, there's the Gibbs Varsity Classic to think about.

Mitchell and the Lady Eagles have put together one of the best softball tournaments in the Knoxville area.

Twenty-two teams from five states will play at Willow Creek Park and Gibbs the next two days.

"We had 16 teams last year and that has gone up to 22 this year," Mitchell said. "And there isn't a bad team in it.

"Honestly, we might be the worst team in the tournament."

And that's coming from a coach whose team is 10-1 after a Thursday night victory against Alcoa.

Local powers Central, Halls, Farragut, Maryville, Powell, William Blount, Jefferson County and Sweetwater are in the field.

Sweetwater is the only team to defeat the Lady Eagles.

Chattanooga-area powers Girls Preparatory School, Baylor and Boyd Buchanan are making the trip to Knoxville.

Out of state teams include Central Cabarrus of Concord, N.C., North Davidson of Lexington, N.C., Hoover, Ala., Cave Spring, Va., and Allen County, Ky.

Lebanon, Elizabethton, Sullivan East, Creek Wood and Blackman round out the field.

Games begin at 4:30 p.m. today with the final games scheduled to begin at 10:30.

The tournament becomes single elimination on Saturday with play beginning at 12:30.

Quarterfinals are scheduled at 5 p.m., semifinals at 6:30 and the championship at 8.

"I think it could be an outstanding tournament," Mitchell said. "It's just a little tiring putting it all together."

For the Lady Eagles, it's all about reaching their five-run goal in each game.

"Every year we come up with a goal, and I decided to make five our magic number this year," Mitchell said. "I think if we can score five runs in every game, we'll win a lot of games with our defense.

"So far, we've been right. As dismal as our offense was last year, we had to gain some confidence with the bats. It couldn't be any worse."

How did CC do last night in their games? I tried to make the trip over but there was a wreck at mile marker 5 on the north carolina side and traffice was backed up to mile marker 27...I knew that I would never get there in time to see the first game.

    CC wins all three

Central performed great in 4 areas.
    Pitching - 28 K's in 42 at bats, 1 run
    Hitting - Scored 20 runs
    Defense - No errors
Baserunning - Looked flawless and fast
They defeated 2003 State Finalist Maryville ??? record, Knoxville Halls (10-4 record) , and Knoxville Powell (9-2 record)

    TENN STATE CHAMPS

CC continues to prove that they are a machine that gets better each time out. They seek out and find the best competition they can find in any state. Then they destroy them. The way they took apart three teams from the our neighbors to the west was beautiful to watch. I have seen this team iin person and they truel get better each and every time out.
Just look at what CC had to say 28K's in 42 at bats :applause: between Allen and Scism. Each of these young ladies will just flat make you wonder why you bothered to pick up a bat.
No errors in three games against high caliber competition :applause: . The hits that come are fielded cleanly and the defense is prepared for every situation.
Hitting, 1-9 as solid as they come. Only one senior starting. This team makes a pitcher work.
Baserunning, an often over looked are area. This team is not only fast, but run the bases with controled aggression. You never see them run themselves out of an inning with a base running error.
I can't wait to see this team on April 19 against Hillcrest.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND HER TROOPS
