Olathe East’s two first team selections led all schools as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association released the 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA High School All-America Team Monday afternoon.

Pitcher Alex Hupp earned one of Olathe East’s first team accolades after a standout season in which she compiled a perfect 19-0 mark with a 0.10 ERA. Hupp went the distance in 15 of her 20 starts and registered 13 shutouts while striking out 217 compared to just seven walks. She was joined on the first team by infielder Ashley Guile. Guile hit .556 on the season, tallying 14 doubles, four triples and a home run. She drove in 35 runs and scored 20 times on the year.

Cactus (Ariz.), who finished the season atop the USA Today/NFCA High School Top 25 Poll, had second team pitcher Katie Holverson join first team catcher Stacie Chambers on the squad. Chambers, who was named Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year for the second straight season, earned her second consecutive first team honor after hitting .483 with 12 home runs, 10 doubles, 38 RBIs and 43 runs scored.

Her battery mate, Holverson, was instrumental in Cactus’ success this season as she compiled a 26-3 mark in the circle with a 0.49 ERA. The hurler went the distance in 24 of her 29 starts and registered 18 shutouts behind 344 strikeouts.

[COLOR="Cyan"]The No. 2 team in the final prep rankings, Central Cabarrus (N.C.), had a first and second team selection in sisters Destiny and Chasity Covington. Destiny Covington earned first-team accolades for the second time in her career. The outfielder, a first team honoree in 2004 and a second team selection last season, hit .472 on the season and drove in 25 runs behind six doubles, two triples and four home runs. She also stole 24-of-26 bases on the year while scoring 48 times.

Chasity Covington earned second team outfield honors after a stellar 2006 campaign in which she hit .422 with seven home runs, eight doubles and three triples. She drove in 27 runs and scored 44 times while stealing 13-of-15 bases on the year for her squad that held the No. 1 spot in the nation several weeks during the year. [/COLOR]
Keller (Texas) St. Amant (La.) each had three all-Americans to lead the overall individual school tallies.

Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year Kristen Shortridge led the Keller honorees. The first team pitcher hurled a 32-3 record and a 0.23 ERA in 2006 as she earned first team honors for the second consecutive season. Shortridge allowed just eight earned runs and 60 hits in 242 innings. She struck out 438 on the season and went the distance in all 35 starts, tallying 23 shutouts over that span.

Third team honorees Kylie King and Amber Tramp joined Shortridge in earning all-America accolades. King, an outfielder, hit .333 on the year and stole 12 bases while Tramp hit .336 with 20 RBIs and threw out eight runners during time behind the plate.

Starla Guffey paced St.Amant’s three all-America selections. Guffey, who threw out 17 of the 25 runners who attempted to steal this season, hit .473 with 44 RBIs and 40 runs scored. Her stellar season at the plate included eight doubles and 15 home runs as she reached base at a .639 clip and struck out just six times in 119 at-bats.

Third team selections Lindsey Hope and Lindsay Kelleher joined Guffey in earning all-America accolades. Hope, a .929 defender on the infield, compiled a .418 average that included 11 home runs and 14 doubles. Hope drove in 38 runs and scored 15 times after tallying a .845 slugging percentage. Kelleher put together a 29-4 mark in the circle on the year for St. Amant. In 34 starts, she went the distance in all but one, giving up 27 runs and striking out 225 as she compiled a 0.92 ERA.

These are two fine young ladies as well as tremendous ball players! They will be very good at the next level and I think have signed or committed to ACC schools!

Anyone know

How do U get nominated for this team? Hard to believe Ashton Ward and Emily Jeffrey are not on this team. They both have excelled their whole HS career. There are others that stand out, Allison Presnell with her Home-run barrage and good glove, Amanda Barrs, Constance Orr this year, Sarah Rappe, and many others from the NC stables but not sure how this thing works. I am sure with time we could all think of several kids that could fit the bill! The ones named above certainly deserve it as players and citizens.
