I have an odd question for those in the Char/Meck area....having been at the last two games for Alexander High School against Olympic and last week against Waddell, I wonder, where are the fans? I mean, ok I will cut some slack to the Olympic fans, many people have gone to T-ville and never returned (haha, not serious folks) but ACHS has always travelled well and went to dang near the state line to see the game Friday night and there were not many more fans across the way then there were players on the field. Is it because they expect to move on and are waiting on the BIG game or something? Just wondering!

BTW, those were some BIG guys that play offensive tackle for Waddell.......... :scared2: :scared2:

Olympic and Waddell are probably the two Charlotte schools with the least amount of fan support. I've been to five or six Waddell games this year, and I don't recall one time where the home side had more people than the visitor's side. Olympic is pretty much the same thing, although the past couple of years they've gotten better support.

Did I also notice correctly that Waddell is a relatively new school? Everything had that familiar new school look, the brick and green metal roof, all the fields lights worked and were on, looked like a very nice school from what I could tell. Good eats at the concession stand too.

it has to be a big city thing.

Not that Durham is THAT big but I noticed this at the Rasdale game @ S Durham. Southern has an incredible football team 13-0 ranked #1 in the state - a big school that will be 4A next year and they still had empty seats on the "not that big" home side - and they even said that was the biggest crowd they had all year.

High school football seems to be an all or nothing thing - some schools have the fanbase that goes year after year while others struggle to put people in the stands no matter how good the team is.

I've been to my share of games in Meck. County over the years and I've never seen that big of crowds, unless it was the in thing that year (a West Charlotte/Indy matchup when both were good, or a Richmond /Indy game) It seems that they get with one team. Right now it is Indy, before it was West Charlotte. I agree with wossa, it must be a big city thing. Can't beat those Friday nights in places like Boiling Springs, Albemarle, Belmont, etc.

I actually worked the Waddell/AC game and it is true that Waddell deserves better support. What Bennie McMurray has achieved at his school is unbelievable....with a total of 32 players this year, Waddell is a very, very strong team.

But it was embarrasing to see the AC side full and Waddell side had enough to make up the band members.

Speaking of Alexander Central...what a great bunch of kids..well disciplined and well coached. They displayed a lot of character!

I worked the chains on the AC sideline...can't get any closer to a team then that. Some of the things I have witnessed this year from the sidelines has been amazing. Coaches cursing out their players...players cursing out their teammates...cheapshots (intentionally)...sour grapes..etc. etc.

BUT...AC was a class act. Sometimes you can better test one's character in defeat vs a win and never (even in the 4th qtr) did AC give up nor point fingers. Teammates were cheering on each other when it was clear that the victory was going to the other team.

AC reflected their coaches who were all disciplined, encouraging and classy. Kudo's to everyone involved with the program...and AC's fans?...Geez...I wish the teams in Charlotte had that kind of support.

I met AC's biggest supporter on the sidelines before, during and after the game. I wish I could remember his name, he was amazing. Reminded me ( I say this in the most endearing way) of Radio (from the movie). He was signaling the defense for plays....led the cheering...and pumped up the team.
What a great, great guy!!!!!! AC is fortunate to have a fan like him.
