I saw this on HSBWEB and thought it was great.

What baseball related presents are you getting your son? or coach?:D

1- a new glove- he's shown me the picture 25 times
2- Ipod- not sure I know what that is. I thought it had something to do with frogs
3- and buy ss-05's bats that he has stored in his closet. I KNOW there are more hits in them

    also for my favorite umpire:

He always appears to be focused on the game and never hears the buffonery of the fan. But one day we were talking and he came clean. " Braves, I always hear the fans yelling at me...especially you". Whoa... I felt a little awkward and thought about walking away from this discussion, but I just couldn't let this one go away. " Jim.....I never yell at you or any other umpire" shook his hand and walked away. After a few steps I turned back around and said, "I assist"...then I walked away.

So my present to him this year is this. I will not assist him this year......

    unless he needs it!!!!!!!!!!!!

    yeah.....an and some when they're not..... :laugh1: :laugh1:

I find the whole idea of hollaring at umpires...or anyone else on the field....interesting. It's usually a waste of breath. The 1 thing that I dispise most about hollaring at HS baseball games is when a fan/fans single out a player, usually from the opposing team, and hollar insults and obsinities at him. I know ..... if a kid stays in the game long enough it gets worse the farther along they go, and they will have to learn to ignore it, but I still dispise hearing it.

BTW.....I rarely hollar at anybody at baseball games, but I'm as guilty of second guessing umpires and coaches as anybody. :laugh1: :laugh1:

    On the contrary...

As I tell all players of mine as well as parents "I am just an ole washed up basbeball player" in which cannot get the excitement thrill and competitive spirit out of my mind and heart....like so many others coaches or not! As I HS Coach of now 15 years and perhaps speaking from the perspective of other HS coaches who have alot of experience this is what makes us different if in fact we can make "the jump" to the next level which is especially tough ie at my age! It is in God's hands like ALL we do in life is!

Had an umpire once, who was being second guessed on nearly every pitch, come up into the stands between innings. He didn't say anything to anyone, as he climbed up near the top row and to the side of the stands. As he watched the pitcher finish his warmup tosses, the umpire said, "You know, you really can see better up here than standing right behind the catcher!" Then he got up and headed back to the field. He got a real chuckle from those of us in the stands and the "assisting" lessened for the remainder of the game.

Interestingly enough....my kid hasn't asked for anything yet....but what he really needs is enough money to cover all his meals next semester. :laugh1: :laugh1:
