To all High School softball coaches. I need some clarification? My DD played in a high school game today and the umpire told her she was not allowed to use her softball glove (Mizzuno - Black with greenish neon lettering). She was told the lettering is blinding to the batters and baserunners and thus cannot be used in a high school softball game in NC. She plays CF. Funny it is allowed in travel ball. The glove was purchased at Grand Slam in Raleigh. Help me out here coaches, she plays in the Durham high school area?

    Partially True

If the lettering has the appearance of the ball then it is not allowed.

    ~Glove rule reorganized
~ Clarified that any gray, white or optic colored marking that give the appearance of a ball-on the outside or the inside of the glove- is not permitted (1-4-1c)
~ Previous rule prohibited a circle that gave the appearance of the ball

Can be found in this years changes here:

Thanks, you answered my question. I did use the black magic marker yesterday to correct it, but just wanted clarification.

That glove is the Mizuno Fast Pitch MVP, probably the most popular and best selling glove nationwide. Probably over 500,000 sold. It is allowed everywhere else...

Is NC the only state that is banning it? What's next, uniform colors??

Also...she plays center field? Note to the opposing coach. If your batter is looking at the center fielder's glove when she is in the batter box, that might be your problem.....

    unbelievable!!!!!

It is amazing what people will complain about. I bet if you write Mizuno and get them involved, this rule will be changed mid season in North Carolina. If more time was spent teaching kids how to play the game, versus using the rules to their advantage, the game would be much better.

All Head coaches are required to attend the State clinic. In this clinic there is a power point presentation. The pp has a slide that shows a black glove with optic yellow writing on the finger that gives the appearance of a ball being inside the glove. The slide says that this type of writing on a glove is in violation and should be corrected or removed from the game.

Your DD's head coach should have expressed this to your DD's team. Now I have never mistaken writing on a glove to be a ball, but I get paid to enforce rules and not interject my personal beliefs.

Had the same situation last year with glove. black and grey with floresent green stitching of the brand and logo. Head umpire at the first scrimmage looked it up that day and according to him logos and brand names can be of any color. this was for a pitcher. According to that the Mizzuno should be legal.

    see this

New rule for NC 2011 ............. 1-4-1c ...Any gray, white or optic-colored marking that gives the appearance of the ball is not permitted. The optic marking may be “blackened” with a marker to change the appearance.
