    It has been announced that Megan Smith, assistant at UNC-CH will be the first fastpitch softball coach for Western Carolina. Congrats to Megan and best of luck to the WCU program (from an ASU alum)!!:xyzthumbs

    Glad to see WCU finally get a fastpitch team. Any other info on when they will start playing of any other info.

    I know several people that would love for that to happen including myself. I do not think they are going to announce anyone untill December?

    It is my understanding that WCU will play a limited schedule of exhibition type games this coming season and begin a regular schedule in 06. They are following a similar plan that NC St. used to start their program.

    You are correct, they start a full SoCon schedule in '06. We communicated with her some as UNC asst. and she and I spoke this past week. Megan is a very nice lady and we are rooting for her to do well at WCU. It's great to finally get a DI program in WNC. Typically there is a noticeable jump in talent from DII to DI competition, so it will be great for area kids to have that level of play available to watch and work toward. A lot of kids and parents believe they can compete at that level, but simply are not fundamentally sound enough or don't have the bat speed, power or speed necessary. When kids and parents get the opportunity to see DI teams play, then they start to get it. This is as much a developmental opportunity as anything else. That goes for coaches, too. Lots of HS softball coaches approach the game like baseball by going for the big inning. Seeing the stratgies of the college game will help them, too. This a great thing all around for WNC softball.

    Glad to see another program come on. She is already making calls and recruiting for that first class. WC very fortunate to have this one.
