    Ive seen that one

as well. Coach teaches at the elementary school or middle school and coaches at the hs. Coach Tate at Oxford Webb does not teach anymore. He coached at Northern Vance for years and taught at a middle school I believe. He does a great job and built a power house at Northern Vance. So it can be done. But it is the exception and not the rule.

We have many coaches at our school that teach at one school and coach at our school. Football alone has 5 and 2 in baseball. Only 2 of our 6 baseball coaches are at the school. It's not a problem for the kids.

    This thread explains a lot.

BTW, we need a spellcheck feature around here.

You are right it does explain a lot. What kind of Baseball budget do your boys have? Six baseball coaches!!!!!! Thats a frist were I have seen more baseball coaches than football. Most schools are lucky to have a couple.

sports are looked upon as extracurricular activities by school systems no differently from band or chorus or drama or anything else. they are seen as an activity to expand the educatioanal experience of the student. i don't think anyone can find in any school system's manual any wording as to sports are to help students reach the next level and the same goes for the other activities. like it or not that's the way it is and i don't think it will change. scholastic sports are an extension of the schools curriculum no more no less.

how about this question? a school hires one of these instructors as their coach and soon he tells his pitchers that they need some work outside practice and he'll be happy to do it but he has to charge for his time because it is after practice.soon it becomes almost mandatory to make the team to pay the coach for outside lessons. especially the borderline players to insure their spot on the team. it has happened to a legion team i am familiar with.

I have heard of players being ask to play on certain teams that are an extention of the HS team (not the school). There is that unwritten law that if you do not you could not make the team. As I said it is unwritten. Glad that there are few examples out there. But you are correct it does exsist.

I think we're pretty fortunate when it comes to coaching. Our varsity and Jv practice together a lot or over lap some because we have 1 field. But all 6 coaches work with both teams at practice.

Head coach - former Barton College 3B. Teach es a lot but really good on fielding and how he wants the team to play. Really knows defense.
Asst. Coach - Played at Elon and at various levels of minor league ball as a pitcher. Works with pitchers primarily.
Asst. Coach - Played at UNCG and various levels of minor league ball. Primarily works with pitchers. Can throw a mean batting practice when he wants to.
Asst. Coach - Played college ball in Va. Carer BA close to .500 but not known for D. Coached a team to HS State Championship in Va. 2 years ago and then got out and moved here to start his own business. Primarily focused on hitting and works with MIFers.
Head JV coach - Played college ball at High Point as a catcher. Great JV coach and works with catchers.
Asst. JV Coach - Works primarily with hitting and 1B. Former Ragsdale player. Had opportunities to play in college but started his own business.
Former Head Varsity coach still comes out every day and helps. Dad of current Head Coach.

We have no shortage of knowledge when it comes to coaching. I've wondered why sometimes we don't lose one when they get their own head coaching job. I can't believe someone hasn't come after one of our assts. As to a budget, I have no idea how many of these guys get paid. I think they like being out there.

    Lost in the politics

What is lost in the politics is what is best for the kids and the program. I had a son in our HS program for 8 years in a row and they played for 7 different Head Coaches. Some were forced out because certain parents were'nt happy and some just could'nt deal with the politics. Why should you hire someone to do a job and their job depend on the results and then tell them how they have to do that job. (Such as who can and cannot help you coach.) The coach that did stay 2 yrs had a great staff in place and the program going in the right direction, then after the season the principal told him he had to remove his assistants because they were not on staff. They were the only school in the system to do this but told him it was a county admin decision.

Back to the main topic. I have seen every senerio and I think it definitely works better if the HC is on staff at the school. The most successful programs I know of have both on and off staff coaches. Hire a good HC and then let him do his job. It should be up to him who is best qualified to help coach. He the one that is there everyday and works with these people. If he makes bad decisions and cant get the job done, then make a change, but let him do it his way. No HC can be successful without full support from the admin.

What is best for the kids should always come first. Take the politics out!!
