    game 1
    Belmont Abbey .........0
    Mount Olive............6

    game 2
    Belmont Abbey.........6
    Mount Olive................5

BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team split a doubleheader with the Mount Olive Trojans at Abbey Yard this afternoon, falling 6-0 in the opener before taking the nightcap 6-5 on an RBI single by leftfielder Derek Swilley with two outs in the seventh. The split gives the Abbey a 7-3 record overall and a 1-1 mark in the CVAC, while the Trojans are now 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the CVAC.

Mount Olive grabbed the opener behind the efforts of pitcher Tom Layne, who held the Crusaders to just four hits in a complete-game shutout. He threw 137 pitches, 87 for strikes as he fanned seven and walked just two. Andy Helms fell to 2-1 in the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on 12 hits in seven and one-thirds innings. He walked one and struck out one.

The Trojans got the only two runs it would need in the top of the second, as it took advantage of an error by Helms to score the first run on a failed pickoff attempt. One batter later, catcher Jason Sherrer singled home Dusin Richardson to widen the lead to 2-0.

The lead grew to 5-0 on a three-run homer by Scott Houin in the third, and the Trojans tacked on another in the seventh to close the scoring.

In the nightcap, the Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one, but the Abbey answered with a pair in its half on a two-run shot by shortstop Josh Haire. Mount Olive would regain the lead with two unearned runs in the second, and that was all of the scoring until the fifth, when Abbey second baseman Alex Castellanos tied the game at five with a towering homer to left, his fifth. The score remained deadlocked at five until the bottom of the seventh and final inning.

In near darkness, first baseman Will Breslin drew a one-out walk. After a pitching change and a strikeout, Breslin stole second, and moved to third on an infield single by third baseman Jordan Pegram. Swilley followed with a lacing single to right on an 0-1 pitch, allowing Breslin to score easily from third base with the winning run.

Abbey reliever Evan Jonas, the fifth pitcher of the afternoon, improved his record to 2-1 after striking out one in a third of an inning. Weston Curles took the loss, surrendering the winning run. He struck out two and walked two in an inning of work. He falls to 0-2.

The rubber game of the series gets underway today at 1:00 p.m.

    bench clearing brawl

    Mount Olive :cussing:

    Sunday , Feb.18

    Belmont Abbey.........8
    Mount Olive ...........9

BELMONT, NC- Mount Olive scored six times in the top of the ninth to erase an 8-3 deficit and thwarted a Belmont Abbey rally in the bottom of the inning as the Trojans won the rubber game of a three game series 9-8 this afternoon at Abbey Yard. Mount Olive improves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, while the Crusaders fall to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the CVAC.

Mount Olive reliever Todd Jeffreys improved to 1-0 as he worked a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit. Patrick Ball earned his second save after he struck out the side in the ninth, after issuing a walk and hitting a batter. Evan Jonas took the loss after yielding four runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. He falls to 2-2.

The Abbey stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first, getting the first run on a bases loaded walk. After a Trojans pitching change, designated hitter Seth Waller reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home shortstop Josh Haire from third to widen the lead to 2-0. Third baseman Jordan Pegram made it 3-0 with a single to left that brought home first baseman Will Breslin.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the third after a single to left by Waller that scored Breslin from second and Castellanos from first after the ball went under the glove of leftfielder Dustin Richardson.

Castellanos made it 6-0 with his team-leading sixth homer of the year to lead off the fifth, but the Trojans responded with three in the sixth on a two-run homer by Josh Harrison and a solo shot by Graham Wooten on the next pitch.

The Crusaders fired back with two runs in the eighth, as third baseman Nick Popp led off the inning with an opposite field homer to right, his first of the year. Catcher Kyle Smith followed with a double to right center, and he moved to third on a groundout by Derek Swilley. He scored on a single to center by Patrick Atwell to increase the lead to 8-3.

In the top of the ninth, the Trojans would take the lead by scoring six runs, with five of the six coming on homers. Harrison tied the game with a three-run homer and Wooten delivered the game winner on the next pitch.

The Abbey had one last chance, as Ball walked Castellanos and hit Breslin with a pitch, but he would strike out the next three batters to preserve the win.

Belmont Abbey is back in action Tuesday when it goes on the road to face Augusta State.

Davidson wins again 20-14 over Georgetown in another slugfest due to wind blowing out at 25 MPH +. Routine pop flys were flying out. It was brutal for the pitchers but fun to watch. Cats go for the sweep today as my son gets his first start on the mound. NERVOUS NERVOUS NERVOUS

ASU lost to Gardner-Webb 9-7 last week Tuesday in a game halted in the top of the 9th inning on account of darkness.

Here's a link to pictures from that game: ASU vs Gardner-Webb

ASU won 3 games this past weekend against Coppin State. Unfortunately Coppin State was at a severe disadvantage with only 14 players on their roster. Apparently their head coach resigned and most of last years players left the team. ASU won the first game 17-2, the second game 23-0, and the third game 19-3.

Here's a link to pictures to the first game: ASU vs Coppin State - Gm 1

It may be a little early to tell, but ASU is definitely deeper this year compared to last year. More pitchers, hitters and fielders. This week's games against Wake Forest and Florida State will give us a much better idea about how good or bad they are this year.

    Thanks Braves

It was a great day with Davidson getting the sweep with a 6-3 win and Mac getting his first college win working five innings and allowing two ER. Our bullpen was awesome in relief. A very different game than the first two which were windblown slugfests. This one boiled down to infield defense and Georgetown misplayed several balls. I guess this is normal for the northern teams early? Oh, and whoever said college kids can hit it FAR was right. A routine pop fly down the RF line left the yard at the 320 sign as Mac gave up his first HR since I can remember.

Way to go Mac!!!!! That's exciting.

Yeah....I did say that #1-9 can all hit and hit it far, but giving up a HR at the college level is no big deal. Think of it as a baptism. It's only 1 run.
