BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Limestone College this afternoon at Abbey Yard, falling 6-5 in the first game before rallying to win the second, 14-4. The Crusaders are now 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the CVAC, while the Saints are now 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the CVAC.

In the first game, the Abbey jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on an opposite field double by first baseman Will Breslin that scored Alex Udwari, who ripped a two-out single. Limestone would gain the equalizer one inning later with an RBI single to left by Zachary Watkins, bringing home Joey Asis.

The Saints would take the lead for good by scoring two runs in the third on a two run shot by Tyler Midgett, and they would add three more in the fourth, two coming on a homer by designated hitter Adam McSwain and a single to left by Midgett.

Belmont Abbey would make a game of it, cutting the lead to 6-4 in the eighth on a three-run blast by senior shortstop Josh Haire. After retiring the side in the top of the ninth, the Crusaders mounted one final charge. After two outs were recorded, Udwari blasted a solo shot to right field, to trim the lead to 6-5. That homer moved him into first place for career home runs at the Abbey.

Breslin was then hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base, but Daniel Philips entered the game for the Saints and locked down the save by getting a groundout to end the game.

Limestone starter Brian Baugher earned the win for the Saints, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking four in seven and one-thirds innings. Andy Helms took the loss to fall to 3-2.

The second game was all Belmont Abbey, as the Crusaders ripped 21 hits as second baseman Alex Castellanos finished the game 3-4 with a single and two homers. Udwari and Seth Waller also recorded three hits as Waller drove in four runs.

The Crusaders led 8-0 after three innings, scoring four in the first and four more in the third. Waller drove in two with a single in the first, and Udwari and Haire also had RBI singles. In the third, Haire ripped a two run homer, followed by a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Patrick Atwell, scoring third baseman Nick Popp, who doubled after Haire’s round tripper. Udwari followed with an RBI single to wide the lead to 8-0.

Limestone scored one in the fourth, but the Abbey countered with two in its half, using back-to-back homers by Waller and Castellanos. The Saints scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth, but the Crusaders scored three in the fifth and one in the sixth as it cruised home with a 14-4 win.

Jason Cline earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing three runs on three hits in four and one-thirds innings. He improves to 1-0. Ryan Maxa took the loss, as he gave up six runs on seven hits in two and one-thirds innings.

    Limestone College.....6

BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey offense pounded out 18 hits, with half of those going for extra bases, and the defense thwarted four Limestone scoring chances with timely double plays as the Crusaders took the rubber game of a three-game CVAC series with a 16-6 win this afternoon. The Abbey improves to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the CVAC, while the Saints fall to 8-10 overall and 2-6 in the CVAC.

Abbey starter David Rue upped his record to 1-0 in a solid outing, scattering five hits over seven and one-thirds innings, allowing four runs and striking out one. He threw 99 pitches. Tyler Anderson took the loss as he allowed nine runs, six earned, on ten hits in five and two-thirds innings.

Nine of the Crusaders 18 hits went for extra bases, including five homers by five different players. The Abbey scored the only runs it would need in the third inning as junior first baseman Will Breslin followed a double by rightfielder Alex Udwari with his third homer of the year, a three-run shot to right center that also brought home Tyler McKenzie, who was hit by a pitch prior to Udwari’s at bat.

McKenzie upped the lead to 5-0 in the fourth with his first round-tripper of the year, a two run shot to dead center. The Saints scored one in the fifth and two more in the sixth, but the Abbey exploded for four runs in its half of the sixth. After Josh Haire reached on a leadoff error, third baseman Nick Popp drilled a shot over the left centerfield wall, his third of the year, to widen the lead to 7-3.

The Saints retired the next two batters, but the Abbey was not finished. McKenzie ripped a single, followed by an intentional walk to Udwari. After a pitching change, Breslin singled home McKenzie, and designated hitter Seth Waller followed with a lacing single to score Udwari to push the lead to 9-3.

Belmont Abbey put the contest out of reach in the seventh, as it scored five times, the big blow coming on Udwari’s two run homer to right. Limestone scored three times in the eighth, but the Crusaders scored two more in its half, as second baseman Alex Castellanos ripped a two-run homer, his team-leading tenth of the year, as he brought home Waller, who led off the inning with a walk.

McKenzie, Waller, Breslin and Popp all led the Abbey with three hits apiece, and Brelsin led all players with four runs batted in to go along with three runs scored. McKenzie scored four times as eight of the nine players in the lineup scored at least once.

Belmont Abbey will play its next four games on the road, as it opens the road trip Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. when it takes on West Florida.

Baseball Upsets 13th-Ranked West Florida, 7-6, In Ten Innings (3/6/07)

PENSACOLA, FL- Belmont Abbey freshman second baseman Alex Castellanos ripped a two out double to rightfield in the top of the tenth inning to drive in the winning run, and Trey Summerlin allowed one hit but no runs in the bottom of the frame as the Crusaders upset the 13th-ranked West Florida Argonauts 7-6 this evening. The Abbey, winners of three-straight, improve to 13-8, while West Florida falls to 18-5.

Crusaders reliever Andrew Morton picked up his first win of the year, allowing just one unearned run on four hits in four and one-thirds innings of work as he upped is ledger to 1-2. Summerlin earned his third save of the year.

The Abbey jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Will Breslin’s two-run homer, but the Argos matched it with a pair in its half. The Abbey regained the lead in the fourth, as Breslin scored an unearned run after drawing a walk, moving to second on a passed ball, and scoring from there on a fielding error to give the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage.

The Argos would tie the contest at three with a run in the fourth, but the Abbey plated three in the fifth, as Breslin again ripped a two run homer, which came on the heels of another unearned run coming across the plate, as the Crusaders built its lead to 6-3. West Florida would score a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, and would push across one more in the sixth to tie the game at six.

Neither team scored again until the Abbey pushed the winning run across in the tenth. After a leadoff groundout, Breslin recorded his third hit of the night with an opposite field double to left. After a pitching change, Seth Waller reached on a fielder’s choice that cancelled Breslin at third.
