Good point, RT. We had two college players coach one of our 14U Cardinal teams last summer and it was a great experience for all. The 14U girls had a blast and learned about the game and how HARD to play the game.

To be honest, I think the college girls learned the most!! There is a lot more to coaching a travel team than just teaching skills and managing a game. Both Mendy M. and Stephanie B. came away with a new appreciation of what all goes into a summer team.

    Be Carefull.....

....folks! As your well intentioned deeds will come back and haunt you! DON'T MESS with the NCAA! Ask CD. Ask others. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE! .....Call your college "Compliance Officer". ....e.g. ....something as simple as a dad of a college player, in the off season having kids over for hotdogs and hamburgers, then throwing the ball around, can turn into a pure clusterF, and get these girls ineligible for that semester. I'm no RULE Guru, but better safe than sorry!

    College Coach-Good and Bad

If you're asking for a college coach, that doesn't automatically mean this team will be put on the map. A college coach doesn't automatically mean it will be a great situation or team. In NC, especially, this has ended badly several times or didn't even get off the ground. NCAA has pretty much eliminated and/or made very difficult to do. Best thing to do is advertise for someone who is up to date with the game of fastpitch. That will help the kids more than anything. Definitely doing the right thing trying to bring somebody in that doesn't have familial ties to the players on the team. That way there should be no bias and especially nepotism. There are organizations providing that in NC now.

I don't know a whole lot about these rules either. But I think Marlin's advice is right on target. Be very careful. Some things that on the surface seem rather benign are not viewed as such by the NCAA and there is no begging to be excused because you didn't know.

    NCAA Manual...

"wonder if the same distance rules apply to a GA?"

It is applicable to all 50 states, Wash DC, and all territories...

They do not have "State" specific manuals

There are D2 college coaches coaching Legion ball; they are under the 50 mile radius rule. Most D1 coaches make too much money with their camps and things to get involved in a summer program.

College players coaching summer ball is acceptable and happens quite frequently...especially those that are rehabbing.

    Best potential travel coach

I would look for individuals that have recently graduated....

One's that came from good programs,
and want to stay involved in the sport,
but maybe not at the HS or Collegiate level..

It's not the same as playing, but close...
