    Transfer Rule

What are the transfer rules for walk-ons? Suppose a walk-on tries his luck at Clemson and doesn't make it. He's gotten no scholarship money. Does the transfer rule apply to him too or can he play at Middle Tennessee in the spring?

Putt- obviously, you are right when it goes in effect...and this only affects D1schools, not D2.

You brought up commitment, Putt. You will find that in college ball that commitment is year to year. A coach can withdraw or increase the commitment based on productivity. The coach may get fired or may transfer the following year. The new coach comes in and informs your son they are not going to renew his scholarship.

All baseball players are on partial scholarships; some only get "books" money, some only get $500. So you feel if a kid has a great summer and school "X" offers him $10,000 more than what he has received that he should be penalized for accepting it? C'mon, this is not football or basketball or for that matter equestrian (they are allowed 16 scholarships). Baseball coaches have understood the transferring rules and as a group they understood that a player may be offered a better deal....the players understood that if they don't perform they may not receive a scholly the next year. It ain't high school, it's a business where one's career and livlihood is affected by the players on the roster.

There are some coaches that will honor that scholly all 4 years: Coach Pait at LR, Loren Hibbs at UNCC and I'm sure there other others, but many do not and any new coach decides on a case by case.

If a kid is offered a full scholarship...fine. But partial scholarships should not be subjected to the new rules. I feel confident that most D1 coaches believe this, too (I've heard them express the same sentiments).

Let me point out another rule that went too far. A great student graduates in 3 years. He takes one grad course to say eligible to play spring baseball. Guess what? The team will be penalized the following year by this student because he did not take enough courses. Another example: A Super stud pitcher knows he is going to be a top draft pick and he knows he will not be returning to school, so he stops going to classes later in the spring. The team suffers for this decision and the coaches will not know it is happening until it's too late.

The NCAA always is reactive vs proactive in the rules it makes...and most times the rules are not very well thought out. This is another example of the reactive mode.

The new rules are going to help the mid-size DI's more than anyone. It will prevent your "big-time" schools from bringing in 40 guys and then sending half of them to JUCO's when they don't pan out. Its makes all recruiters a little more accountable (which they should be).

Coaches and AD's. These rule changes usually take place at the Divisonal meetings at the ABCA clinic.

This opens another can of worms. I'm pretty sure coaches can't recruit kids from other teams. Who says a coach can't let a good player on another team know that if wants to transfer that they will offfer him twice the sholarship funds? Is that right?

Some schools do offer for more than a year. Some, like South Carolina usually don't.

I feel if a school wants the kid bad enough they will be willing to wait. What prevents kids from jumping schools?

On the rule about taking one grad school class, that is horse hockey howwver for the kid that is going to get drafted and quits going to class, as a parent I have a problem with that. That's not what I want to teach my kid.

I was under the impression that you could have up to all 35 on scholarship. If you do the math, max. of 11.7 scholly's, a kid gets at least 33% (can get more), 11.7 can take you to 35 kids each getting at least 33%. Am I wrong on this?

    You are Incorrect...........I think.

    One Putt,

As I understand it, ROSTERS will be limited to 35 players, however, only 27 players may receive SCHOLARSHIPS.
