I had 2 umpires tell me composite bats were now illegal. I coach middle school but we are under the NFHA and no LEA rules affect bats as far as I know. Has something been passed to that I am not aware of. Funny thing they looked at my girls bats which are nearly all composite and let them use them. Just trying to make sure I know what is legal. Thanks.

As of last Friday 2-11-10 composite bats in HS and MS in NC were legal. No changes have been made in bat requirements. Tigercoach... have the umpire produce his paperwork showing where he got his info. If his info came from the state assoc. Then all of us on this board are wrong and the state has not informed HS and MS about the change. The umpires boss/booking agent may have given him some things to look out for as far as composites. But no one in the HS or MS assoc has ruled all composites illegal... I may be mistaken but I think that the state follows the ASA softball list very closely.

The ump may have been talking about Baseball.

When umpires check bats are they required to do so with a bat ring?
I had one tell me a bat was illegal because it was dented he ran his hand down it Its my belief that if it fits the bat ring (which he did not have) its legal I tried to discuss that with him before the game even started and the young rookie asked if I wanted to coach this game. He had a chip on his shoulder. and a bad attitude needless to say he was put on the "he aint callin any more of our games" this year list.

    NC Softball handbook

Bats must meet ASA-bat performance standards and have a certifying stamp on each bat.

This is from the NCHSAA Softball handbook........

Thanks Stan. this is what I thought but wanted to check before I put my foot in my mouth. Which I am very good at by the way. This was a non-conference game so I let it go but I will follow up on it now. I knew something was up when the first bat he checked was a 2010 Stealth and said it was OK. But it did get my girls all worked up because they all thought they would not be allowed to use their bats.

Umpires are required to check bats for dents, cracks, rattles, loose end caps...
A bat ring is a device that can be used by an umpire to determine the condition of the bat, but it is not required.

If you feel a dent, but can't see it the bat should further be checked in that area for stress cracks.

If you can see a dent then that bat should be removed.

Individual conferences adopt their own rules that sometimes differ from high school. If this is considered a safety issue, then it is possible that your conference may have decided against use of the composites. Heck middle school is pitching from different distances all over NC, so it is possible.
