Only two - which means two really good teams will be sitting at home.

The Meca 8 is coming down to the wire: With one game remaining in everyone's schedule, the current standings for the leaders is:

    1. North Meck: 16-4; 11-2
    2. Independence: 14-5-1; 10-3
    2. Central Cabarrus: 15-4; 10-3
    2. Hopewell: 12-6; 10-3

North Meck plays Central Cabarrus on Thursday. A win by NM keeps them alone in first while Central will fall to 4th. A win by Central will create a 4-way tie for 1st place going into the conference tournament.

The SW4A is pretty much settled pre-tournament.

    1. Providence 12-1
    2. South Meck 10-3
    3. East Meck 8-5
    4. Butler & Olympic 7-6

Providence plays South Meck thursday in a pride game. The conference standings at the top are pretty well set as East Meck will finish off the season on that day with Waddell, locking up 3rd.

    Playoff tie breaker

If the MECA, or any NCHSAA league, have a four way tie, the league’s top seed will be the conference tournament champion, with the #2 seed going to the runner up. The third seed would be the tied team that advanced farther in the tournament but did not make the finals. If the other two teams are eliminated in the same round of the conference tournament, and split during the regular season (head to head if first tie breaker), a special play in game will be held after the conference tournament.

If, however, a team that was not in the four way tie, won the conference tournament, they will become the number 2 seed, number one seed been the team of the four that advanced the farthest in the tournament with a play off game for the last playoff spot.

Wow..that can be dizzying. Perhaps a best of three; Rock, Paper, Scissors contest would be the last alternative.

Seriously, the MECA 8 Tournament ~ to borrow a phrase from the NBA~ is fantastic

    NPC standings as of 5-4

    NW Cabarrus 10-3
    West Rowan 10-4
    Kannapolis 9-4
    East Rowan 8-6
    Mooresville 7-6
    North Iredell 5-8
    Statesville 3-10
    Lake Norman 1-12

The game between NW Cabarrus and Kannapolis scheduled for Thursday @ NW will decide the final regular season standings. If Kannapolis beats Northwest, there would be a 3-way tie for first place and Kannapolis would get the top seed due to season match-ups. But if Northwest wins, the Trojans clinch the title out right.

Green Hope comes from behind the last week to win the Tri-Seven conference championships.

Playing conference leader Fuquay-Varina on the last day of the regular season, Green Hope overcame a 4-0 deficit to force extra innings. In the 8th, a bases loaded walk to Matt Holt forced in the Conference Winning run and sealed the deal.

It's a very tough conference with Fuquay-Varina, Apex and Lee County all nipping for 2nd place in a dead heat .... The teams all ended with 8-4 records, but Green Hope wins the tie-breakers by virtue of have a better record head-to-head with the other contenders. The conference tournament will determine the other post-season participant(s).

There's some GREAT baseball going on this year.
