Congratulations, Woody, for being nominated as one of the best in the country. It's a little puzzling to be nominated on your relief pitching when UNC utilizes you in both relief and starting roles plus the fact you tied with Bard with the most wins on the team, but just to be nominated as one of the premiere pitchers in the country, is very prestigious.

Good luck in your season this year. I know you will be successful in whatever role you play to help your team :applause:

    Quite a challenge today

Robert and the #4 ranked Tar Heels have perhaps their toughest challenge to date this afternoon, when they face Gardner Webb and the Bulldog's highly touted Kannapolis native, junior Zach Ward. Ward has already been named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week once this season by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, and was the pre-season pick to be the 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference player of the year after a very successful summer on the Cape. Ward will be a tough challenge for the Tar heel bats, which have been shaky despite the team's 8-0 record this season. Look for a low-scoring pitcher's dual.

Set out below is part of the story from the UNC baseball web site.

"Woodard (0-0) will make his second start of the season for the Tar Heels. He ranks seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 1.08 earned run average and second with 14.04 strikeouts per nine innings. Woodard has fanned 13 in just 8.1 innings on the season.

Ward is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 22 strikeouts on the season. He tossed a no-hitter versus Akron on February 19 and has allowed just two hits and one unearned run in 18.1 innings."

It is going to be real tough for Robert to win the relief award as it becomes more and more apparent that he is going to be used often in a starting role. :D

Good luck to both these North Carolina teams this afternoon!

UNC edged GWU 6-5 on a late inning comeback ...

Neither one of the starters were involved in the decision. This was a great test for both teams ...... The state of NC is seeing some great college baseball this year.

Congrats to both Zach Ward and Robert Woodard on their early season going. I know both are just going to get better as the season progresses (and the weather gets a bit warmer)....

Geez it's cold for baseball right now ... :D
