Ball hit to left field, fielder attempts to make the catch and misses. Fielder attempts to pick up the ball and in the process kicks the ball and it rolls under the temp. fence. The left fielder holds up hands and umps award the batter 2nd. base as normal. I do not think the umps saw the kick, but it was clearly not on purpose by the fielder. Question is if it had been seen by the umps what is correct placement of the runner? If second is correct maybe they did see it and they gave the runner the correct base? I was not in the discussion on the call. Just curious. By the way the runner scored so it had no affect on the game.

    It is correct

and if this is the play in Morganton over the week-end that you are referring to the umpires did see it. They ruled that it was accidental and therefore a ground rule double. If they had ruled she had done it intentionally there would have been a different ruling.

    Correct Call

An inadverdant kick does not change the ruling. NCAA rule book page 87 rule 9-1 states runner awarded 2nd other runners advance 2 bases.
Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Glad it had no affect to the game.

What if the umps thought the kick was on purpose?

    Rules

NCAA rulebook page 149, rule 12-5 states if it is intentionally removed from field of play by defense 2 base awarded from time of infraction. Most cases batter would be placed at 3rd.

    intentionally Or Not ??

I would have to agree, intentionally or not if the kid is around the ball her intentions was to retrieve the ball...don't see how you can base your judgement on being accidental or not. So I would agree with fastpitchndad on this one !!!

    rule

Is there a rule in the book that backs up fmrumps post of ground rule double on an accidental kick?

    ok

I missed it fastpitchdad page 87 9/1. So it is a total judgment call by rule.

Yes, lets just hope that ump can see something 220 feet away from him.
I mean if he can't see the ball crossing the plate 5 feet away surely you can't expect him to see into centerfield. JK:thinking2:
