I posted this on the HSBBWEB and wanted to post it here as well. Thanks in advance for any advice/comments.

My son (current junior) sent out 12 contact letters a couple of weeks ago. He only sent 12 and they are to the schools he really would like to attend, and range from D1, D2, and NAIA. They were mailed on a Wednesday and Friday he got an email from the Asst. Coach/rec.co-ordinator at a D1 that is his first choice. He wanted us to send a tape. Saturday he got a letter from the Head Coach at a school he would probably rank high on his list, and he asked for his transcripts. My questions are: What should I put on a tape? As HS practice has not started would it be acceptable to take him to a field and just film 15 - 20 swings and put him at short (he's a MI) and film the same amount of ground balls with throws to first. Is this going to be okay with just him on the field, along with someone to take the throws at first? As far as the transcripts is it okay at this early point in recruiting to send copies of the latest one we have, or do I need to get the sealed version? I know when official recruiting age/time gets here they need to be sealed but not sure now with him being 16 and July of official contact time a ways off. Just trying to do the right thing and hoping to get some advice.

    Many Thanks

ya might better get all the clearinghouse stuff done .

You want the video to be brief..
Maybe you should do your own mini workout..
if he is an outfielder: field a couple fly balls, a couple base hits, throwning to each bag, etc..
same with infield.. a few grounders would be all you need... maybe show the arm strength..
Take a few swings at the plate...
For a pitcher.. just run thru about 8 - 10 pitches ...1 or 2 from the stretch...

not over 10-15 minutes of total time on the video... do your editing ...

    just my opinion..

    Blade,

Agree with prior advice. Keep the video short. Focus on the skills the coaches are interested in for his position(s).

As for transcripts - and assuming they are ok (or better) gradewise - send what you have - and if they dont include the latest semester - write a brief note concerning current grades.

    Not really that complicated.

    Good luck.

We all have our own ideas of what makes a good video tape ...

Jeff Spelman is the leading scout for Team One baseball. He gave this advice over on the HSBaseballWeb .... Most of your questions are answered here. College Coaches don't expect a professionally produced video. They do want it to be useful and this is a great guide.

As far as transcripts, the college only needs an official one before they can invite you on an official visit. It's an NCAA requirement at that point. They want to see your transcript early on to make sure that you will probably be a qualifier (taking the right courses and making the right grades). The NCAA Compliance officer and Admissions folks want to get a heads-up and get an idea early.

Because of all that, this is not required to be an "official transcript". If you have one that you want to photocopy or email, that will suffice.
