It seems only yesterday Bill Ellis was constant motion as part of the Runnin’ Bulldogs at Gardner-Webb from 1971-75.

Now he’s reached a key milestone in his coaching career. Tuesday night his Charger boys basketball squad gave Ellis his 300th coaching victory in a win over Forestview.

Ellis — who also had successful coaching stops at Statesville and McDowell — already has a number of honors to his credit. Ellis has been named conference coach of the year at all three of his coaching destinations. He’s also a member of the Gardner-Webb Athletic Hall of Fame and also had his high school jersey retired at his alma mater, South Iredell High.

Coach Ellis was given the game ball from Crest Athletic Director Guy Suttle after Tuesday’s game and also congratulated by former Charger coach Ed Peeler, for whom the gym is named.

“He is an outstanding coach but he a teacher and instructor first,” Crest Principal Roger Harris said in a statement. Mr. Ellis is well respected by all students and does an exceptional job as a mentor for young people, as well as a coach and teacher. Crest High is lucky to have a man of Bill Ellis’ integrity and ability on our faculty.”

Congrats to Coach Ellis. A great Coach...even better man.:trophy:

I played for Coach Ellis at McDowell back in the late 80's. Very good person and coach. I can remember when we would get back to the school from an away game very late and Bill would have to make that drive back to Boiling Springs and then back to Marion early the next morning. I never once heard him complain. He is a very dedicated coach. We won the conference championship during the last year he coached at MHS. Good luck to Bill and the Crest Chargers on the rest of the season.

I to remember coach Ellis from his Mcdowell days. I truely believe the Mcdowell boys would have at least 1 state championship hanging from their rafters if we could have kept coach Ellis at Mcdowell. If I'm not mistaken coach Ellis left mcdowell headed for r s central in rutherford county but before he could start their was a big controversy at that school because the assistant coach hines was not offered the job. Coach Ellis ended up getting the shaft and r s central got what they deserved, a coach that took a great program and destroyed it.However this worked out great for Crest Shelby and coach Ellis. I really miss not getting to play his team in the NW4A and I hope the school returns to our conference before he retires. I did hear someone say at the freedom christmas tournament that this may be his last year, can anyone verify this.

His daughter is a JR at Crest and he's close with the JR's on this Crest team. I think he coaches at least one more year. I remember that deal at RS. He actually ended up at Boiling Springs Elementary before going to Crest.
