I was told a few minutes ago in e-mail that Crest has been disqualified for playing an ineligible player (self-reported). Interesting Developments... Grimsley gets a free pass to the State Finals. No word on who the player was and frankly, it doesn't matter at this point.

This happened as of 2:10 p.m. Friday afternoon.

I've heard that too, but not from someone I'd consider above doubt. Interesting if true.

How about Rick Strunk, Associate Executive Director of the NCHSAA. Is that a high enough source? I can quote the e-mail if you'd like. It's a done deal. Sorry for Crest and their fans, but Crest self-reported so kudos to them for being honest.

Any word on how the player wasn't eligible?

Just posted on the Greensboro News & Record site...

Grimsley wins by forfeit; no game tonight
    From Staff Reports

Grimsley has advanced to its first state football championship game since 1960 after its scheduled opponent forfeited tonight’s 7:30 p.m. game.

Boiling Springs Crest reported the use of an ineligible football player to the N.C. High School Athletic Association. That means tonight’s game has been cancelled and Grimsley will play in next Saturday’s 4-A title game at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

“I’m disappointed for the fans and our students because it’s been a great team effort of support for this very special year,” Grimsley principal Rob Gasparello said. “You never like to see this happen to a team, but the rules are the rules. You’ve got to play by them. We’re looking forward to heading down to Raleigh.”

Grimsley will play the winner of tonight’s Lee County (9-5)-Greenville Rose (14-0) game. Championship game tickets go on sale next week. Kickoff is at noon Dec. 10

By reporting the violation, Crest -- the two-time defending 3-AA state football champions – knocked itself out of the playoffs. It also must forfeit any games for which the player dressed and will have to return revenue and awards accrued during postseason play.

The high school association did not identify the ineligible player or which game or games he played in.

"This is a most unfortunate matter and we are deeply sorry about Crest’s inadvertent use of an ineligible player," said Charlie Adams, NCHSAA executive director. "But we certainly commend Crest for the professional manner in which it has dealt with this difficult situation."

The fine for use of an ineligible player is $500, and it will be reduced in half due to Crest's self-reporting of the violation.

For real. I'd be livid if I were them. If Crest had figured this out earlier this week, could South Caldwell have played tonight?
