I figured that since Central is the greatest thing since sliced bread someone would have demanded that they be moved up to D1 or atleast they would volunteer to not play in any playoff games (just like that team in bb did that one year).

ALL HAIL THE SOFTBALL KINGS :229031_ha

Hey CCFastpitch there are other teams that play softball in this state!!!!!!

    Dead Periods

Let's put this in terms anyone can understand. REPORT me, I have coached in the Char-Meck system, in two different schools, for a total of 10 years, if you're gonna quote rules, READ them first. Smooth Criminal is the only one who has stated the rule as it stand in the NC Federation of High School Athletics. This has nothing to do with any other school. WE KNOW THE RULES, and have athletic directors to keep track of what we do. But that being said, good luck to all of the female athletes that participate in H/S softball.

This is the worst rule in high school and SHOULD be at the top of the list for the new coaches association. This is much more important than All-State teams and so forth. Work on changing this. As someone stated it is in place to try to get kids in other sports but this rule is now out dated. Many many kids now days specialize in only one sport and there is nothing wrong with that. With softball especially, this is the one rule that will eventually kill softball in highschool and cause girls to only play travelball as do the west coast girls. Nearly all of the highschool coaches that are any good are the assistants who are also travelball coaches and if they have to chose one over the other nearly all will chose travelball. DEAD PERIODS are the worst rule in high school!!! Let's get rid of it before next year.

Why not do away with all the rules the state has. The dead period is in place for a reason and it covers all sports. Yes some schools can have kids that their players only play one sport but others need kids to play more than one sport to put a team on the field. Should they suffer while others do not. Also one needs to account for a school having a coach do more than one sport.
To let some in on a secret, they do not coach for the money. The coaches and their families go through a lot so they can coach. I do not think that it is too much to ask for a team to have a dead period.
I believe the coaches association has bigger fish to fry then the dead period. How about quality fields, to include those were the State Finals are played, Walnut Creek has become a joke. A team should not have to play on fields and worry about foul balls from the baseball field.
The association also needs to promote the sport. Many of you were on here complaining about the lack of rankings and All-State teams this past spring, so they fixed that first.
As far as your coach being reported, he simply got caught :banginghe . When one lives by the sword they can die by it as well. Did his travel team sing after victories on another teams home plate like his varsity did?

No need to do away with all the rules, only eliminate or modify the ones that are not in the best interest of the sport.

Please explain how having a dead period allows or makes it easier for a kid to tryout for other sports. Without a dead period these kids would still tryout wouldn't they? I would say that 99.9% of coaches understand when a kid misses a few days to play in a national tournament where there are plenty of college coaches recruiting. There may be some extra work when that player does join the "in season" team, but that is understandable and fair.

Over past 4 years, the volleyball coach at our local high school has had softball players (who also play volleyball) miss the start of practice due to being at the ASA Nationals. This coach understands the importance of the exposure at these tournaments and does not hold it against these players. There is always extra practice and conditioning for those who missed, but the coach knows these girls just weren't taking a few extra days at the beach.

Now about the coach being "caught", he was only going on what turned out to be an inaccurate interpetation of the rule he was given when a call was made to the NCHSAA prior to the start of the tournament in question. This is why in the end, the fine was rescinded by the NCHSAA. So I guess the sword must have missed it's mark.

    Results of Winter Meeting/NCHSAA

Well it seems someone has raised the dead period issue again(no pun intended). The NCHSAA recently completed its Winter meetings. The Coaches Association's entire list of concerns were placed on the Board agenda. That means the NCHSAA addressed each one of the eight items that were turned in for consideration. The "Dead Period" was one of those concerns. The NCHSAA said that the dead periods were in effect for all sports, for reasons that have been talked about over and over about not overlapping sports and giving the athletes that opportunity to try-out for other sports and not have to worry about missing a game or practice and on and on and on. In their response to our concern, it was noted that the reasoning was listed in the handbook and that all coaches should be aware of what it says. So, from that statement, I don't believe the NCHSAA is going to change their view of the "dead period" in my lifetime. Some other things maybe, but this is one almost seems impossible to sway the minds of the powers that be. The complete NCHSAA's response to our concerns should be posted on fastpitch website in the next couple of days. I will tell you that about the only positive thing to come out of their responses was the expanded playoff numbers. If we can get a little bit at a time........we will continue to promote our girls and the sport!
