Congrats to DeSean. Braves your alma mater just stole a good one from North Carolina.

DeSean is a great athlete. Solid hitter, blazing speed and covers a lot of territory in center field. He's fearless out there too. He takes on all center field walls. Now if we can just get him back on the football field. He took a lick in a scrimmage and is out with a concussion. The Tigers miss their punter/cornerback/receiver/backup QB. yes - he does it all.

And to top it off he comes from a great family. His Mom and Dad raised him right.

DeSean is an extremely close friend of the family. One of my son's closest 2 friends. We traveled the AAU road together all over the Southeast. East Cobb, Fla., Cherokee Reds, all over. Those were great times. Our family is very excited for D to be able to realize his dreams.

For those of you that don't know him, D can be a freak athlete at times. I remember once in middle school where he hit 9 home runs (310 feet) in a row in batting practice against Buddy Jones pitching (brother of Rick Jones at Tulane) and Buddy brings it. He has freakish power. He's got wrists the size of my forearms. Tremendous hand speed that allows him to wait until ther last second to swing and he can then take it out opposite field. D also has a flair for making big plays in big moments, having big games in big situations. Last year he went down to te Wood Bat in east Cobb and drove the ball all over the field. I saw D in a tourney this summer and he struggled a little the night before. The next night I could look in his eye and tell we were going to win easy. I looked at some of the parents of the younger players and said, "this game is over. D is taking this guy out." D led off and 2nd pitch, POW! Out of Memorial stadium. He has that flair.

I hate to see D leave the state of NC and the ACC however this is the right situation for him. He can study what he wants to pursue for a career and he likes Columbia. I wish my Wolfpack had done a better job recruiting D but Columbia is the right place for him.

D the next two years will fly by. I wish these high school years would not end for you, Walt, Billy, Ben, Bennett, and the boys. You guys are having the time of your lives right now. I am very grateful you have been a great friend to my son. The Sparks family is very happy for you and we will continue to always be there for you. Congratulations. You earned this and you deserve this.

    Love ya, The Sparks family
