    Character revisited...

So we know about the kid throwing a helmet or cussing or - all the rest.
The "bad kid" with the attitude problem.
But what about losing a game - a hard fought battle - and as you step on the bus - gut-wrenched; less than five minutes removed; less than 100 yards away from the field - 4-5 "good kids" are yucking it up. LAUGHING. PLAYING. Like nothing ever happened - much less a game that sent you to 4-5 in the conference; under .500 for the first time in 24 years of the program!

Where do we put that behavior in terms of character?
    What is the penalty there?
Again, "good kids" who would never throw anything or offend a teammate.

    I'm interested. Let's hear it...

The importance of "team competition" has been so diluted in my opinion with showcase and individual accolades and accomplishments that kids these days don't worry about the overall outcome but what they get out of it. Just my two cents on the matter.....they don't make us competitors like they used too.....

Starters? or bench riders? I ask because I believe the view point is different from each. If not the starters, I would say they haven't learned that a team loss is a team loss even if you weren't on the field and that like it or not they contribute to the successes and failures of the unit and those actions have impact on the team as a whole.

However, I do think that sometimes those kids don't own it like we would like. If they were starters maybe it is time to see if the riders are willing to own it and not be so casual in loss.

I don't think it is a punishable offense per se, but one on which you could have a little reflection on who wants to be a member of a team and who wants to go run track.

PS: all your parents were very thankful for my call letting them know of your validation. You should have no more issues there. I would have called your biological ones but I didn't have the number.

Please don't take any offense bbx3...

... but the post was truly rhetorical.

Again, no offense intended, but I really am not looking for true suggestions on what to do. I just wanted to throw this out there for thought in terms of some folks quick trigger (last week when the thread started) on disciplining players with "character problems".

I will add that I try my cotton pickin' best to not distinguish between starters and bench-riders. I'm sure I have faltered here, but I try to treat them all the same in that aspect.

And as for your PS about the biologicals, my dad just got out of Baptist hospital yesterday at 3:00, and is recooping from the four day "vacation", so it would have been hard to reach he and mom during that time. He will be fine though... as long as the Bobcats turn it around.

Thanks for the thoughts and light humor.

No offense taken. Assumed you personally didn't need me of all people to help you deal with your team.....hell, I don't even coach. but I love to have an opinion.

Please don't leave your "biologicals" lying around!

Hope your dad is all good, but the chances of the Bobcats turning it around for him don't look good.

    How about Coaches showing character...

How about when coaches dont value/exhibit character in front of their players? They cuss, throw things, kick and scream, walk around with a spit cup with their nasty tobacco. Then you got the kids that have trash mouths and tantrums during a game and the coach puts them right back into the game while other kids just as talented and strong character and leadership ride the pine. Character begins at home but coaches have tremendous responsibility too.

    No defense here.

I personally must admit to the occasional screaming - well, more of a yelling - but the rest named above, eh, not my style. However, I am sure - positive - that other faults can be found with me. Hopefully the fact that I do the laundry really well counts for something.
