MHAA was exactly what I was thinking about, You, Bill and Barry and I tried our hardest to get the powers that be to understand that Rec and Travel ball could live and thrive together. Matthews Softball Association has adopted that philosophy and now has one of the best run and most populated and successful Rec league in the area.

I hear your frustration with TB trying to work with rec ball powers. We've been through that in Raleigh from time to time.

I believe that more TB players should be playing RB when they have the opportunity. Whatever skills are dulled by playing at a lower level, if any, can surely be re-sharpened. I believe the opposite might happen; especially if you're trying to show a lesser-skilled player the correct way.

What has happened in the past at one association I'm aware of is that when TB came calling that association lost its top players. That is devastating to an organization. The players who looked up to those top players are left with a really empty feeling. It can take years to recover from that.

Another risk with TB players playing RB is having a team that can't be beat by the other teams. That is equally devastating.

As long as things are kept in balance TB players should be a part of their local community teams. This would help the sport thrive. Kudos to those families who help share the fun.

If what you are saying is true than the same can be said for high school ball. The girls playing REC are mostly the other half of the high school teams that do not play TB, and some very good one's who just choose not to play TB. If you had a DD you might understand that better. So would you question a girl who drops down from TB and plays SB where the talent level is not as high, and where a player can make fundemental mistakes and get by with it, as you stated? I understand your point about the talent level. It's undeniable, but I don't see HS ball ruining any TB players. It's all the same kids. No matter what skill level a DD plays at it's how she works away from the team that counts the most, but I think we both agree playing against better talent does improve the skill set. My DD is a perfect example. But also, just because she plays TB and decided to play a little REC ball with some friends and use it as quasi practices doesn't make her any less of a player. All due respect Coach......She can still hit your pitching :)

Rec Ball, travel ball, high school ball whatever you are playing-if you are getting quality coaching and instruction then I say go for it. Thing with some rec ball leagues is the coaching is not there or there is just not enough time to practice and work on all the little things. If your daughter enjoys playing then I say let her play-kids foot with their feet.

    Thanks fish

From my post, your post Fishman are right on. My DD is now playing TB and will by the end of the NOV have played approx 90 or more games along with 2 prac a week barring a injury for the 2009 yr. So RB is out for the time being. She simply loves TB. BUT, if she "wanted" to play RB, we would try to find the time for her to play. With school soon starting and the need for family, church time also thrown in all this.

If we faced an injury or a $$$$ problem, job layoff or lost of job. That could force a BIG cutback in distance travel. Yeah RB would be our option and we would enjoy it and use it to better her in any way possible.....

Yeah, Jeeter is the man, know matter where he plays.

    Does Rec ball matter....

    Yes.
Anytime a child wants to play, let'em. Don't forget that this is a game. Meant to have fun. Once the fun stops, it becomes a job... thats when you lose them.

    90 games.....

...WOW! Thats awesome. no doubt time logistics dictate choices for all of us and I'll tell you this Pal, the most games I can remember having played in TB (spring, summer, and fall) was somewhere 70ish.
Hands down a big time congrats goes out to your group for giving so much to the game!

Derek Jeter, Hall of Famer 1st vote, multiple World Series, and ALCS wins, appearances, and all in his 12 or 13 year career, even living in New York, Jeter has NEVER made a fool of himself off the field like 90% of ALL athletes do at one time or another.
If there has ever been a role model for the kids, DJ would be my vote.
