Gotta tell a Coach Bagwell story:

A year ago, Hal attended his son's first game of T-Ball. It was so unusual to see him on the sidelines having to act like a parent. I walked up to him and suggested that this was the perfect opportunity for him to coach his son. I told him that they allow coaches to stand behind the players and give them instructions during the game. He said no....he didn't want to interfere with the coaches on Jake's team..he just wanted to be a parent. I left for a couple of innings then came back to Jake's game. I searched for Hal but couldn't find him. I asked Hal's wife Lisa where he was. She said, " he's out there behind Jake coaching" :D....coaches just can't get it out of their system. But the funniest part was Jake was playing 3rd base and chasing to tag a runner out at home. When it became obvious to Jake that he couldn't catch the kid....he threw the ball at him and called the runner out :D
I asked Hal if he taught that play to his Varsity players.

    Coach Bagwell

Coach Bagwell.....Genuine! Every baseball player should be so lucky as to have a Hal Bagwell in their life. The man is a gem. He lives and teaches much more than "baseball".

Thanks Mr. Braves for the interview. :xyzthumbs

    Yes sir

The man knows his stuff and his players off the field and that is what makes him a good coach. If a coach knows how to get things done on the field at the high school and college level then he will be average. Coach Bag's knows how to get it done off the field and on the field. He understands what players do off the field and how much time it takes to do well in the classroom. He knows that if his players are not getting it done in the classroom then they won't be getting it done on the field because they won't be out there. He knows how to deal with things. He wants to know what is going on in your life off the field so he can help you get over it or through it so you can be doing something you love on the field.
You never know how much you respect a coach or learn from a coach until you are not playing from them anymore. Because when you play for them they are always in your ear and wondering what is going on in your mind even when you don't even know what is going on in you mind. Believe me, it happened all the time.
He is in the top five most respected people list in my life because of what he has done for me by going the extra mile as he says he will do.

    Thanks Coach

3 Stories and maybe I'm done

    HAHA

As a sophmore I transfered to South. I had played varsity at my previous school but wanted to talk to Coach Bagwell before I made my finale decision to transfer. I meet him at South when they had the conference tourny there a few years ago (seems like a lot longer). I sat in the stands with him and another one of my good friends that told me he would be at the game (of course getting info on the other teams) I thought to myself when I saw him this man means business and won't go home until he gets it. I started talking with him and my friend. We talked a lot about school and my grades and everything else in the world while he wrote down all the info. on the teams. The last thing he said to me was "It was good talking to you and come day one you better be ready to strap it on and deserve what you want because I'm not going to give it to you unless you do." O yea "Goodnight."

As a sophmore I lost my grandfather. It was within 2-3 weeks of the season and I wanted to get back to school so I could practice. He told me to take at least a day off and maybe more. He saw me the next day at On Deck trying to hit (was not a pretty sight). He walked in a said I thought I told you to take a day off. I told him I couldn't let my spot be taken. He asked me why I was thinking about a spot. I didn't know it just sounded good. He handed me the phone to call my parents to tell thim to come pick me up. He was right. I needed to be at home with my mom to help her, and 2 days later I was back on the field playing better then ever. Same thing happened to me with my grandmother when I was a senior. And the same result. He sent me packing and told me baseball isn't life like everyone says it is. It's just a game we play to take our minds off life for 2-3 hours and have fun with our friends and get after the people on the other side.

I sat down the with him the other day when I got back into town from college. The first thing he asked me was how are your grades. 2nd thing was how is your family and life. 3rd thing was about my girlfriend and if I had one. And last thing was how is baseball going. He keeps in contact with everyone of his players' that have graduated weather they are playing baseball or not. He calls me every week or 2 to see how things are going. So not only does he spend 3-5 hours on the phone with the scouts every day he also talks to his former players. He even keeps spots open on hs staff for us former players to come back and get our heads wet in coaching.

But he does not teach us to throw the ball at the runner. I swear. And what if he did? Thats how they play stick ball right.

One of the greatest things of being a coach is to have a former player tell you how much you touched his life. :applause:

I am looking forward to the clinic Coach Bagwell will be settng up for the NCBCA next year in Charlotte. The format used this year was great and different frm some I have been to, so I look forward to any innovations and spins he puts into it...

We had a good one in Raleigh this past weekend.

    Coach Bagwell

I have also had the opportunity to play for Coach Bagwell. I played for him at the State Games. This past summer I also got to witness him as an umpire, when i was coaching my team. He has alot of respect for the game and goes about thing the right way.
