Just curious because I couldn't find it in the ASA rulebook, but when is a batter technically out after a dropped 3rd strike. I've always heard whenever they began to walk back to the dugout but I haven't been able to find anything in the rule book. I saw this happen in a game where the batter turn and took 5 or 6 steps back to her dugout and the catcher rolled the ball to the mound because it was the 3rd out. Just hoping someone could provide some clarification on this.

When they enter dead ball territtory, when they start to their defensive position or after all infielders have left fair territory.
(Added: when they are tagged or first base is touched by a fielder with the ball of course)

Do you know where exactly it talks about that? Can't find the specific rule.

Don't have my ASA rule book, but this should be the same for all rule sets.

The rules governing this should be found in the section concerning Batter-Runners. Usually under the "Batter-Runner is out...." section.

For example, in NCAA it is covered in section 12.4.4 "....she leaves the field of play."

(added: If less than 2 outs and 1st base is occupied.)
